Springing [part 1]

yay for spring post, finally. One-third into the season before I came out with this entry, what a lazy bum D:

Before the arrival of Spring anime series, I expect a hell lot of busy time in my uni schedule so I didn't think I would put a number of series in my watchlist. But then the semester doesn't go as bad as I thought (well, at least it's only bad in the middle of the first term due to my insane practicals), as I can still enjoy some animu on weekend and sometimes weekday night providing I finished my work early. And Spring series started somewhere around the end part of my big practicals, so I definitely going to take the chance to take a look at the series it has offered :3

Another "brief" first impression I suppose. Don't have much time to online atm :(

Asura Cryin
official/MAL
comment: Light novel adaptation with supernatural, action and the likes injected into the story (similar to Index/Kaze no Stigma, in some ways). Definitely not something I would expect the first time I saw the promo poster, which looks like some random harem titles. Love the actions/fightings they put, with some jokes here and there (albeit sometimes unnecessarily), and nice OP/ED song by Angela (start loving her songs since Shikabane). Animation wise is marginally okay, the mecha(?) design looks goodl too. +1 for cool OP song.
verdict: **** (will watch)

Fullmetall Alchemist: Brotherhood
official/MAL
Comment: The first time I heard the rumor about this 2nd FMA, I wonder what kind of story would it take. Another alternate story? Direct manga adaptation? Episode 1 told little about it, but it become perfectly clear from episode 2 onward, with the obvious inclusion of stuff from the manga like the corruption in Lior, and recently Shou Tucker's case. I have always been a fan of FMA, both the anime and the manga, so it's no surprising this is among the top of my priority list. One thing that not really to my liking so far are the OP/ED song. Well it's just a matter of taste I guess.
verdict: ***** (absolutely must watch)

Guin Saga
official/MAL
comment: Not an eyecandy for the recent moe stream, I guess. A fantasy adventure series where the main hero had similar fate to Hakuoro (Utawarerumono), irremovable leopard "mask" and searching for the truth about himself, along with a twin who are the descendant of a kingdom. I like where the plot goes as far as episode 3 concern, and hopefully it gets better. For some reason, the BGM used especially during tense moments remind me a lot to certain old rpg games (FF9/Kingdom Heart?).
verdict: *** (will watch, but not priority)

Hatsukoi Limited
official/MAL
comment: From the creator of Ichigo 100%, combined with the masterpiece of JC Staff. So what can you expect - quality animation overloaded with romance. Good thing, the studio production does not messed up the story unlike Ichigo 100% adaptation (at least so far it didn't disappoint me). The comedies are quite funny too, which is definitely a thumb up from me.
verdict: *** (will watch, but not priority)

Hayate the Combat Butler S2
official/MAL
comment: the long awaiting 2nd season, after almost a year missing. Now with more interesting parts of the manga included. Hopefully we will see less filler this time, although at the moment this is written, i still don't know how long will this 2nd season run. And OP by ELISA is so uncalled for, really. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather see season 1-style kotoko song. Yet another product of JC Stuff, which means they have now take control of all 4 Kugimiya lolis tsundere (Shana, Louise, Taiga and now Nagi) :333
verdict: **** (will watch)

K-ON!
official/MAL
comment: One of the overhyped show this season so they say. But who cares, I'm totally in love with K-ON, just like how I like Lucky Star. Girl with guitar (bass lulz) is do want. Every episode are refreshing and full of laughter, definitely something I don't want to miss. Every week, something from each episode spread through the internet like a virus. From the unpan, occupational disease, puni puni, to moe moe kyun :3
Added to that is the addictive ED song which become instant hit the moment ep1 came out. Can't argue with this. It's sad that the series only runs for 12 episodes, but there is still possibility for season 2 anyway (which become unlikely/far from certain as the show rolled in). fcuk yeah Mio <3>verdict: ***** (absolutely must watch)

Pandora Hearts
official/MAL
comment: Another supernatural, action series. Nothing much to comment about the story, but I can say that the characters aren't really to my liking. One aspect that I definitely love about the series, which made me stick to it until now is the BGM, composed by none other by my favorite Kajiura Yuki, alongside with the great OP and ED song. I sense imminent dropping, unfortunately. Because so far only the songs/bgm that hold me from dropping this show.
verdict: *** (will watch, but not priority)

Phantom~Requiem of Phantom~
official/MAL
comment: One of the better series for me so far. Dark theme surrounding the involvement of mafia and assassination, with two trained, "heartless" assassins code named Ein and Zwei as the perpetrators. It's interesting to know that the game where it was adapted had way so many routes, some of which I hope would be integrated into the 26-episodes anime. From the current episode (4) onward, I expect both of them doing their usual assassination mission, with once in awhile accidentally exposing their human nature. Ein as normal girl is so lovely :3
verdict: **** (will watch)

...........

but then whether I watch or not on weekly basis depend on subber. I totally can't take sub with more than 300MB, it will totally suck away my monthly internet quota D:

[XBOX360] Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope

Maybe this time I should make my review simpler..

I pre-order the game and it arrived at my home right on the first day of my third year. How difficult it is to manage time to play the game and staying focus on uni workload, especially practicals @.@ It took me about 2 weeks to finished the game, and further few weeks to complete post-game dungeon, including beating the infamous Gabriel Celeste and Ethereal Queen ;D
I guess this would be pretty much the continuation of my impression to this game from this entry.

Gameplay (9.5/10)

Definitely the awesomest aspect of SO4, as one would aspect. And it never failed to disappoint me in any way to be honest. The battle system is much better than SO3. As summarised by my previous first impression, the introduction of BEAT system and chain combos made the gameplay attractive to the eyes, added with excellent graphic to make it even more spectacular. While BEAT:S are fairly useful early in the game, in the long run, having BEAT:B is more beneficial mainly because of the extra bonus HP, as well as allowing us to be in Rush mode much longer.

Battle Throphies. While seeing them returned in SO4 is a great pleasure, however completing all of them are not so rewarding. I mean, extra battle voice at 30%, remove level cap at 50%, another extra battle voice at 75% and 3 extra CP at 100& completion? Not even extra costume like in SO3? You disappoint me, Tri-Ace. Seriously the only point to get 100% BT is 1) to get your character to level 255, and 2) to get the achievements. But then some of the BT are really hard to get and some even require tedious grinding...

Story (7/10)
Average and a bit typical at best. But I can't complain much on this, since even SO3 plot went downhill in the 2nd disc. Typical of Tri-Ace I guess, they seem to excel a lot when it comes to gameplay, but failed make the story to be consistently exciting throughout.
A.D 2064...Planet Earth was on the brink of destruction as clashes between the World Republic Federation and the various nations that opposed it sparked the outbreak of World War III. Weapons of mass destruction, deployed with complete impunity razed the land in the blink of an eye. The dire situation forced the two opposing factions to negotiate a cease-fire and an agreement was quickly reached, but although the war may have ended, its effects remained. With the deteriorating environment, Earth's population was drastically reduced and those who survived lived a confined existence trapped in underground cities. Eventually countries joined together to form the Greater United Nations and turned their eyes skyward, to space. With the establishment of the USTA, the Universal Science and Technology Administration, man began to seek new worlds beyond the stars.
AD 2087...The first year of the spacedate (SD) calendar. Thanks to the success of Professor Trillas Bachstein's warp drive experiments, mankind's dream of a spacebourne existence has inched closer to reality and the USTA secretly began to implement its SRF project, the Space Reconnaissance Force. Now it is SD 0010, and the first official SRF mission and your adventure has begun.
And their space exploration turned into an unsettling journey as they discover the existence of unidentified celestial object (Gregory, Missing Procedure..) that pose threats to the universe - and they feel it's their job to stop it. Edge and the crew of Calnus went from one planet to another, initially from a discovery mission changed into a mission to save the world.

Characters: The most disappointing aspect of SO4. Really, really disappointing. Forget the awesomeness of Reimi and how badass Arumat is. Edge Maverick, while is a dedicated leader with positive thinking, at one point become a weak hearted loser, even worse than Capell in Infinite Undiscovery. Sure it's part of the story, but I just can't accept someone with his kind of attitude. Lyme's English voice is EXTREMELY TERRIBLE that I feel like killing her whenever she opens her mouth ('mkay). Sarah is a retarded klutz. Miracle is a failed product of anime-esque nekomimi. Myuria is slightly okay, I guess. Bacchuss is...uh no comment. Faize looks too girly.
But despite that, I can't argue about everyone's combat ability, which is far more valuable than their personalities. Sarah is definitely the best healer and worth putting in the party, especially in post game dungeon where most enemies can easily kill ur characters. Miracle is totally kickass with her rapid combos, especially at higher level. Arguably one of the best melee character in the game. Think of her like a super speedy Cliff Fittir of SO3 (well she did learn things like Claw of Fury and Max Shockwave XD). Bacchus are very good in stunlocking enemies. Arumat, with his final skill Dragon Roar can easily face all enemies singlehandedly. Reimi tops everyone with her long range attacks.

Music: Overall nice soundtracks, but still not as great as SO3 in my opinion, considering it is the same Motoi Sakuraba who composed the great BGM and themes in SO3. I don't think there is a single battle theme that matched the awesomeness of Cutting The Edge of Notion and The Divine Spirit of Language. The only notable music, for me is Incarnation of Devil, which is of course the battle theme of Ethereal Queen. While the field BGM are still good, they are not quite as memorable as SO3, at least to my point of view. Mind you I love most of the town's theme in SO3.

...............................

TL;DR: unfortunately, overall SO4 failed to live up to my expectation after I explored the whole content of the game, and after all the hype going on for this game. Yes, the gameplay is totally awesome, arguably one of the best jrpg gameplay system in 360 (as great as Vesperia, although Vesperia is far too broken) with a lot of new features for the players to experience. Sadly most of the characters utterly failed with miserable voice acting and personality, with the exception of Reimi and probably Arumat. Great music arrangement, but not as awesome as the music in SO3. Lot's of sidequests and Battle Throphies offered, with post-game dungeons taking you to a whole new level of Star Ocean exploration.

Worth buying? Yes, for it's gameplay and sidequests, for action real time jrpg fan, and Star Ocean fan. But if you seek for stories and awesome characters as in Tales of Vesperia, then SO4 will most likely disappoint you.

Cyberfusion 2009 Open Tournament

Tournament: CyberFusion 2009 One Invitational Tournament
Date: 10 - 12th April 2009
Venue: Multimedia University (MMU) Grand Hall Cyberjaya, Malaysia
Map version: DotA Allstars 6.59d, Warcraft III: TFT 1.23
Format: best of 1 (best of 3 in semi final and grand final)

last 16 bracket:

tournament outcome:

  1. Kingsurf (RM5,000 + Sapphire ATI Graphic cards)
  2. Fishnet (RM3,000)
  3. Mineski.Tbun (RM2,000)
  4. DNA-SK (RM1,500)

source/replays: Gamestah cyberfusion

..............................................................

This event were held as part of the event held to broke the world record of the longest continuous LAN party, although participants in the tournament does not directly involved in the LAN party. At most 56 teams participated in the tournament, most of which went through preliminary round in the first day (Friday the 10th) before qualifying to the last 32. Some noticeable teams involved in the tournament includes DNA-SK, Mineski.my (former Ucpro) and of course, arguably a top team in Malaysia (if not the best), Kingsurf.

Kingsurf attend the tournament strengthened with their new addition into the team, former Impreza starlet Lemion. Together with Hyhy, Tofuboi and the long served member Yamateh and papaxiong, they march through from each round to win the tournament. But the road to victory does not sound as easy as it looks. While they have virtually dominated their first three playoff games against STR (not in bracket), Amazone and Axis, they met their real test in the semi final against Mineski. After hard fought victory in three games, they march to the final, meeting Fishnet. Fortunately the final were not a pushover for Kingsurf as Fishnet gave little resistance in the first game, and while their performance improved in the second game, they still failed to stop Kingsurf's domination (despite KS using unusual hero like Nightstalker)

Highlight summary credit to Underminer:
1. 3 full Singaporean teams participated in this tournament and all 3 managed to reach the Quarterfinal stage. They are Axis.GWSG, Fazethemusic and PMS. Where PMS has in it 2 female gamers!
2. The 3 game series of the semifinals between Kingsurf and Mineski.Tbun definitely is the replays worth your time watching. For Mineski having both hands on Ks' throat at game 2 after winning game 1 comfortably they simply lost it due to the combination of pure genius from all 5 of Kingsurf players. Ks Tofu admitted after the game that he was barely playing on at that time with 1 hand clutching his mouse sensing the imminent defeat until a stroke of genius by Yamateh at the Roshan area gave them a ray of light at their darkest hour and Ks took full advantage. With their momentum winning at game 2 brought them an early lead at game 3, Ks suddenly decided to murder everyone having a faint heart watching live. For some reason, they decided to trade 2 of their raxes with a roshan kill and traded another 2 more of their raxes for a throne tower, bypassing Mineski 2 mid raxes. With the rax score at 0-4 down, suddenly Ks looks sure of defeat until pure genius saved their lives once again with a few perfectly executed combos taking Mineski.Tbun down.

Congratulation to Kingsurf for winning he tournament. Really great games against mineski in the semi final.

pre-spring rant

Since it's already too late, I'll just wrote my brief impression toward series I watched that ended before Spring 2009. Maybe I should start alphabetically this time.

Akikan [my rating: 6.0/10]
number of episodes: 12

It's not everyday you see a story with this kind of concept - drink can turning into girl and need to fight each other. Sometimes the humor really made me laugh hard (albeit a bit dirty), but most of the time, it was dented by horrible animation. If only Brain Base could improve this part just a little, then I might have enjoyed this show a bit more. And I totally cannot understand the inclusion of episode 10..

Asu no Yoichi [my rating: 6.5/10]
number of episodes: 12

An anime adapted from manga with the same title. The story stays close with the original story although there are slight alteration/addition as we would expect from most adaptations. Nice animation quality, okay OP/ED songs. But since they doesn't take the anime that far as far as the manga concern (yes, until the appearance of that wimpy Ukyou which is far off befitting a role of final obstacle) , this somehow disappoint me a little.

Clannad ~After Story~ [my rating: 8.5/10]
number of episodes: 24

Definitely one of the better show I enjoyed before the Spring. It's already been accepted on where the story would go since the beginning, so I have no qualms about the lack of Kyou, Tomoyo, Kotomi and others' appearance; as long as there's still humor every now and then. Can't argue about episode 22 and 23 as the best episodes of the series. Then again, although it end as expected, I still am not happy with the ending. Yes, it has all been planned that those lost will be returned, but isn't it just too easy to happen, with all those miracle happening in a glimpse of the eye, and then all those miseries were then treated as a mere nightmare of Tomoya.

Maria†Holic [my rating: 9.0/10]
number of episodes: 12

Best Winter show in my book :D Yuri might turn me off, but seeing how briliant SHAFT studio divert this element into something worth laughing at in each and every episodes is just incredible. As expected from the producer of Zetsubou Sensei :3

Minamike: Okaeri [my rating: 7.0/10]
number of episodes: 13

third season. Just as I thought season 2 has the best ending, they continued with Okaeri. Well, as long as it's comedy slice of life, I don't mind watching it. Overall Okaeri provides satisfaction to me with their randomness and humor. There is however one noticeable irregularities in animation in one of the episode though. Nevertheless having at least one more season won't hurt I guess, since there are still characters that I want to have more screentime, like Hitomi :3

Munto TV [my rating: 6.5/10]
number of episodes: 9

aka Sora wo Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai. What a long ass name. The first 5 episodes are completely negligible to those who have watched the movie, since it's almost the exact copy of the movie. And this series has only 9 episodes, so basically we enjoy new thins in like.. 3 and a half episode (since new stuff started by the end of episode 6). Very short, and I barely understand the philosophy used throughout the series - except common things like protecting one's future, importance of friendship blablabla..

Shikabane Kuro [my rating: 7.5/10]
number of episodes: 12/13
Sequel of Shikabane: Aka. TBH I never thought I would follow this until the end of Kuro, since the voice acting were utterly horrible. On the plus side, the story of Kuro has become more interesting compared to season 1, with more twists and turns involved like Kagami's real identity, Keisei's death, as well as confrontation with Shichisei. On paper the series indeed ended at episode 12, but in actual there will be 13th episode coming this August which would be the real ending (I suppose)
ps: I just know that Yui Horie played 3 roles in this series. I noticed about the cat and the woman at the orphanage, but doesn't quite noticed her when she voiced Kamika :3

Tales of the Abyss [my rating: 8.0/10]
number of episodes: 26
I absolutely love the ps2 game, and seeing this as a video game adaptation, at first I don't really put much expectation in the series. But ToA never disappoint me till the end. Abyss's strength, compared to other games adaptation lies in the simplicity of the story with little plotholes (unlike Vesperia, for example). Which is why even without playing the game, a regular watcher won't have much trouble understanding the terms used in Tales of Abyss. Some people might get disappointed with the ending, but it can't be helped since that's exactly how the game ended :(
And, AbyssChronicle sub rawks! I love how they use the game's font whenever the character use their artes : D

To Aru Majustu no Index [my rating: 8.5/10]
number of episodes: 24

Another top ranked series in my book. Well adapted, great animation and music, good use of special effects during battles. Plus adorable characters too. The ending have sequel written all over it, and I certainly can't wait for it. In the meantime, I guess we can sit back and wait for a certain scientific railgun's arc :3

Toradora [my rating: 7.5/10]
number of episodes: 25

As mentioned in my Fall rant, I don't really favor the way JC Staff design the characters in Toradora compared to what they looked like in the LN/manga. But the series itself give a good impression to me, with what considered as good ending. Well sometimes I do have the urge to punch someone in the series because of various things (stubbornness? idiocy? un/selfishness?), too bad they didn't exist.

Tower of Druaga: Sword of Uruk [my rating: 7.5/10]
number of episodes: 12

Sequel from the title aired back then in Winter 2008. This time the story is more serious than the prequel, so there is no random episodes as seen in season 1. Nothing much to comment, it still retained a bit of funny moments especially in the early part of the series, but totally went into serious mode in the latter half. Good ending, though I could say I don't really grasp the ending quite well, especially regarding Neeba's true motive to wage war agaisnt the god.

Viper's Creed [my rating: 6.5/10]
number of episodes: 12

Talk about Higurashi end. Overall Viper's Creed is average at best, although things got a little better in the final 4 episodes. I admit though, they got me when I thought an important character like Haruki died far too early. The story itself have many thing left untold, like Saiki's past which has not been described in detail, unlike other Viper unit member which got their own episode.

I never thought that I watched this much animu D:

Umineko no Naku Koro ni

Umineko no Naku Koro ni (うみねこのく頃に , lit. When Seagulls Cry) is a Japanese murder mystery dōjin soft visual novel series produced by 07th Expansion. The first game in the series, Legend of the golden witch, was first released at Comiket 72 on August 17, 2007 playable on the PC; the game sold out in thirty minutes. The story focuses on a group of eighteen people on a secluded island for a period of two days, and the mysterious murders that befall most of the people. The goal of the game is to discern whether the murderer is human or of some other supernatural source. Umineko is the third title in the "When They Cry" series, preceded by Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai.

.......

Just today I finished the first chapter (or first arc) of Umineko no Naku Koro ni, Legend of the Golden Witch. Not exactly played, as what you would expect from a visual novel where the gameplay was very linear (and in this case, straightforward without any branch), and involved mere mouse clicks. And to be specific, I'm only playing the demo version, together with English translation patch.
All information on how to play the game can be obtained from the translator's group website, Witch Hunter translation:
http://witch-hunt.com/

The demo itself cover the whole chapter 1 of the series, which should be enough to give players on what to expect on future chapters/arcs, should they decide to purchase the rest of the series (currently up to chapter 4 is available). And that's what I'm planning on doing, in the near future. Oh, the thriller. Nothing less to expect from the creator of Higurashi, eh :3

These are what I can comment based on the demo I played.

Visual: definitely not the best aspect of Umineko, as most of the characters art were not as appealing as one would expect. Considering the game was released in 2007, I thought they could improve the character designs a bit, but then visual wasn't really the main point of Umineko. The feeling of the game was still successfully channeled to the reader via the story (of course) and music/sound effects.

Music: One of the better elements that made me continued playing this, despite the boredness of just clicking and reading through the texts (wall of text isn't my specialty after all). Clever use of music to fit the mood of joy, horror and suspense throughout the game. Although I think there were some musics that me, the demo player couldn't experience because they are only available in the full version.

Story: The strength of most visual novel, if not all. And this is what driven me to buy the original copy of the game (that is if the torrent isn't available lol). It all happened in the space of 2 days, a series of gruesome murders occurred in the island of Rokkenjima, the gathering place of Ushiromiya family. And this is driven by puzzle created by the head family, Ushiromiya Kinzo that hold the key to the so-called treasures granted by the Golden Witch, Beatrice.

The thrill and horror did send the chill down my spine especially since most of the time I played the game past midnight. Island isolated due to typhoon with communication totally cut. Horrible way of death. Blood all over the place. Mass killing with face totally crushed that they can't even be recognised. Icepick (Seven Stakes of Purgatory) struck into the forehead, to the chest, to the stomach, to the knee and to the leg. Incinerated to the point that the victim can't even be recognised. Each victims were brutally killed in a way that no human could ever imagined.

And in response to the murders, there's the searching for the cause and mystery that clouds the truth. Throughout the game, various theory were devised especially by the main character Ushiromiya Battler, a young man who stubbornly refuse to accept the existence of magic and witch till the very end. He tried to explain the mystery behind each death, the closed room (like we usually see in many detective novels) and the possibility of the existence of the extra person which could be the real culprit. And with that, he kept on repeating the idea of turning the chessboard to look at the motive in the culprit's point of view.
Although, in the end it's all come to nothing as the cases are far from the stretch of human imagination could reach. Simply because it's hard to deny that the murders was done by magic/witch, as many things can't really be explained by logic. Eg: Natsuhi's room and the presence of Maria's talisman at the other side of the knob.

Gameplay: Simple click all the way till the end, so what we really need is the will to read through all the text, although having nice music /special effects accompanied each scenes sorta make up for the lack of gameplay. Opening the menu (right click) allow us to save/load game, as well as Tips menu which contain the hierarchy of Ushiromiya family along with their brief description. The description (and visual) change whenever something happened to the character...that is when they're dead.

One more year to come

Ahhh I missed again, just like last year. Yesterday this blog reach its second anniversary. Well late by 3 and a half hour isn't that bad I guess. TANJOBI OMEDETO! \(^0^)/

Still a being lazy ass during my mid term break, which end by this weekend and then continued with the 2nd term of this semester. And lazy to update the blog too. Come to think of it, I haven't even touch my 360 for a few days. There's still a few game I planned to play, but then by the time I have the space to play it, the break might have already over, and I'll be back to the usual day of practicals, labs, reports blablabla -_-

ps: yes, my wide screen monitor crushed a few months back so I can only satisfy with my old monitor @.@

back from slumber

HOLY SHIEET I just noticed that I haven't update this blog for more than a month!
Uh..many things happened since March that kept me busy from updating this. Start of new semester, continuous labs and reports, new games.. in short, I'm just too lazy to write ;p
Now that my mid-semester break has arrived (until the end of next week), I guess I need to write what I have planned in the last month. But then I still have some assignment to be submitted this Thursday and Friday DD:

future raison d'etre plan:
-[review] game review: Star Ocean 4
-[animu] before the spring quick review
-[animu] spring series quick impression
-random blablabla about 360 games
-random stuff
-random stuff
-random stuff
-...
-..
-.
