The Impression Series: Spring 2011 [Part 3]

Finally the last part of Spring 2011 Impression.
part 1
part 2

Deadman Wonderland
MAL/Official
Genre: action, thriller
Studio production: Manglobe
Number of episodes: 12
Comments: Since I've never read the manga, the first episode kinda gave me a mixed impression - great animation but the story begin in a rather intriguing, yet distressing manner - the bloody scene in the classroom with only a single student survived, Igaraki Ganta, which were then accused as the main suspect; and with no room to defend himself, sentenced in the form of life imprisonment at a unique theme park-like prison called Deadman Wonderland. Since I'm not entirely convinced that I would enjoy the series, I decided to give a few chapters of the manga a try; and damn, I would say the story really exceed my expectation, in fact I would even say the anime did better in visualizing the motion to fit with the mood of the scenes depicted in the manga. And episode 2 certainly erases my worry as I started to enjoy the show. From being framed to the imprisonment at Deadman Wonderland, we see how Ganta tries to survive the ordeal and life at the prison, whilst also making a few friends in the process, including a mysterious albino girl named Shiro (who had the personality of a typical Kana Hanazawa’s cheerful character). Then many mysteries and questions started to appear, starting from the origin of the gravitational collapse in Tokyo (which now become the location of Deadman Wonderland), the identity of the Red Man and Shiro, the reason Ganta was left alive in the incident and then framed for the crime, the power that awakened within him, as well as the conspiracy, darkest secret of Deadman Wonderland itself. Many thrills and intriguing incidents that would keep me at my seat, definitely don’t want to miss this.
Verdict: 4/5 (watching)

Ao no Exorcist
MAL/Official
Genre: action, drama, supernatural
Studio production: A-1 Pictures
Number of episodes: 24
Comments: A Child of Satan, becoming demon's greatest enemy, an exorcist, to get rid of demons. Okumura Rin has been a problematic man since his childhood, a stark contrast to his gentle twin brother Yukio. Living under the care of an exorcist, little did he know that his real identity is an illegitimate child of the god of demon, Satan. An incident which reveals his true self, and saw his adopted father sacrificing himself eventually led Rin to the path of exorcism, against Satan itself. It was a great introduction to the series, coupled with good usage of visual effects in the battles. Off the battle, there's also a few mild comedies that tickle my sense of humors. The 2 episodes so far were enjoyable (to some degree), and I'm expecting more interesting things to happened next, now that Rin is enrolled in True Cross academy, although for now this series is not likely to be put in my higher priority watchlist.

Verdict: 3/5

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Boku-tachi wa Mada Shiranai
MAL/Official
Genre: drama
Studio production: A-1 Pictures
Number of episodes: 11
Comments: Ano Haha, aka We Still do not Know the Name of the Flower we Saw that Day. In short it was about 6 really close childhood friends, whom after the death of one of them, Meiko Honma (aka Menma), changed as years passed and become somewhat distant to each other. The main character Jintan become a shut-in, and it was him who met the reincarnated Menma (ghost), thought to be the embodiment of his own stress. Another girl, Naruko become more involved in fashion stuff, although her old hobbies of collecting games and manga remained. Deep within herself, she still has great care toward Jintan. Another guy, Poppo who used to be the smallest when he was child, now is a big guy and likes to travel around the world with the money he earned from his part time job. And the last two, Yukiatsu and Tsurumi seems to change the most, with both taking their life and study seriously. The reappeared Menma had a wish she wants Jintan to fulfill, but it can only be granted by reuniting the distant old friends. A really refreshing drama if you asked me, seeing how the appearance of Menma brought some vigor to Jintan, and with all the things Jintan done trying to grant Menma's wish, eventually also brought the friends that has become distant in recent years closer. In the end, although everyone seems to change drastically (appearance and personality-wise), they still had a piece of their former self, all which were bound together by Menma. So far things went well for Jintan, Poppo and Naruko, and I am looking forward to how Jintan would deal with (probably) the more serious Yukiatsu and Tsurumi.
Verdict: 4/5 (watching)

Hidan no Aria
MAL/Official
Genre: action, comedy
Studio production: J.C Staff
Number of episodes: 13
Comments: My, another Kugimiya tsundere lolo (with scarlet hair too), now with a pair of gun. The story is promising, in a sense that it somewhat mirrors the life of students at a special academy in Toaru series. To be precise, it is about a seemingly normal guy, Tohyama Kinji who enrolled in a special academy that trained Butei, an armed detective force. He dreams of leading a peaceful life (and even plan to quit Butei altogether), but an encounter with an S-ranked butei named Kanzaki H Aria forced him out of his wishful dream. I like the premise, and even more because the main character Kinji is not a wuss (thanks to his conditional Hysteria Syndrome which triggers his godlike combat abilities). The only problem I had so far with the series is that aside of Kinji, the other characters (As far as ep2 goes: Aria, Shirayuki and Riko) were very stereotypic, in particular, Aria who had the vibes of Shana all over her, so there's no need for me to decribe more. Well, on the good note, the series was made by J.C. Staff, hence the animation quality was always something to admire for. I wish the OP song could have been better composed though, the song by May'n sounds out of place with the series.
Verdict: 4/5 (watching)

C -Control - The Money and Soul of Possibility
MAL/Official
Genre: science fiction, thriller
Studio production: Tatsunoko Production
Number of episodes: 11
Comments: Other title was rephrased as The Money of Soul and Possibility Control. Regardless, this is one of the strangest anime title I've ever heard, in that it made little sense, and it was reflected in the story. Being an original series, it had a compelling theme, relating money and wealth of a person to their own future in the era when financial recession become a huge problems. The story centered around a college student Kimimaro Yoga who wished to lead a normal life, but an encounter with a strange man changed his life, as at the cost of his future, he was granted access to strange realm called Financial District, which allowed possibilities for him to make lots of profits/money. His role in the District is to battle (with the help of his Assets) against other people like him, with their money/future at stake. I really fancy this kind of strange story, along with the peculiarities that were brought from the Financial District, for example the black money which can only be seen by people who had gone through the District, as well as the mysterious guy that invite Kimimaro in the first place. The battle that took place in the District so far wasn't really the strong point of the series, but I do like the striking colors used, kinda give the prefect sense of strangeness to the world of Financial District.
Verdict: 3.5/5

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko
MAL/Official
Genre: comedy, seinen
Studio production: SHAFT
Number of episodes: 12
Comments: Another amazing work by SHAFT, again with their world full of strangeness. When the story begin, we're shown a normal high school student, Niwa Makoto, moving to her aunt's home and is looking forward to his new life. But what we seen after he and his aunt Touwa Meme arrived home bring us to complete bewilderness - a girl about his age, wrapped in futon, lies at the entrance. The dialogue that follows afterward, with Niwa asking so many questions about the girls, gave him little answers. Then we know that his new life at his aunt's place is nothing short of extraordinary, filled with many kinds of strange girls. Just as the title suggest, the girls that Niwa encountered so far has been pretty weird in many sense. The futon girl, Erio claimed she is an alien, while girls he met at school, Mifune Ryuuko and Maekawa have their own kind of oddness too. Part of the twist involving Erio's disappearance in the past that led to her present state is really intriguing, in fact I would say the same for the whole story. As expected from SHAFT I guess, and they really did great with the beautiful animation. Strange and extraordinary was the central figure of this anime, and the OP reflected it. I personally do like the song though :3
p/s: futon moe.
Verdict: 4.5/5 (definite watch)

That's it for the impression. There's a few more series that I actually watched, but I guess it's too much to add into these posts.

The Impression Series: Spring 2011 [Part 2]

Part 2 of Spring 2011 anime series.
Part 1

Hen Zemi
MAL/Official
Genre: comedy
Studio production: Xebec
Number of episodes: 12
Comments: aka Abnormal Physiology Seminar. And the story went exactly as the title went. It's about a university student Nanako Matsutaka, who joined a seminar/research team consisted by strange, abnormal people; and led by a rather perverted professor. And that’s pretty much what’s the series is all about - strange, somewhat funny and perverted fetish in many ways, showcased by the very unique characters in the series. The ideology and personal interest of the people in the group (except for Nanako, who seems to be the most "normal" one) made little sense, maybe none at all. How would a research proposal like "Secretly urinate in various locations in diapers"; "catch fart underwater"; "raising fruit flies in the auditory canal"; "studying borders that connect various part of body (aka indirect/long distance touch)" could make a decent article/thesis is beyond me. The OVA released last year gave a rough idea of what the series like, and despite the mediocre/simplicity of the animation art, I do find myself enjoying the comedies. A 15-minutes run for each episode barely hurt, right?
p/s: beware of scat element.
Verdict: 3/5 (still watching, for now)

Sket Dance
MAL/Official
Genre: comedy
Studio production: Tatsunoko Production
Number of episodes: 12
Comments: School Life Support Club (SKET-dan: Support Kindness Encouragement Troubleshoot) - a school club that accepts request for help and aids in order to provide a smooth school life. Not many people actually turned to their club to ask for help, hence they often did nothing at the club room, although once in awhile they do ended up doing odd jobs (kinda like Otogi Bank in Ookamisan). Three (and only) unique club members - the vice president Onizuka Hime (aka Onihime), a banchou who specializes in brute force; club member Usui Kazuyoshi who always has his laptop with him, and would speak with a voice synthesis software; and club president Fujisaki Yuusuke, aka Bossun who, if concentrate, can use his brain to solve various things. The series focuses more on the daily life of SKET-dan at school, filled with many ridiculousness and comedies, and occasionally the requests that they took and how Bossun often ended up using his "intelligence" to solve it (one of the few things I like about the series). It amazed me how the three of them can casually dressed like that compared to other student, but...ah well, who cares about logic. To some degree I did enjoy the show, but to me much of the comedies looked unnatural/forced (like many other shonen series like this) that it took away part of my enjoyment. The musics were nice and fit with the mood of the scene, but I feel many times the music was way too loud and hinders the character's voices, and that also was a bit of a turn off for me. I guess it's just me and my preference.
Verdict: 3/5 (candidate for drop)

Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai
MAL/Official
Genre: comedy, romance
Studio production: Nomad
Number of episodes: 12
Comments: I've never read any other material about this series, so the anime was new to me. After watching 2 episode, I am still not entirely sure of what to make of the series. Is it a harem split into 3 separate stories (like Ef), and how much random comedies affect the story? But one thing for sure, I do like what I've seen so far. Apart of the three main male characters (Takashi, Shuusuke and Hayato) and the girls that they try to deal with, the many others likeable characters involved in the series were really refreshing. The comedies (some which are slightly dirty, coupled with mild fanservices) are really amusing, and I guess this, together with the appealing animation art, are all I need to consider adding the series in my long-term watchlist. Well, as long as the next few episodes didn't disappoint me, and hopefully the plot would take its pace soon.
Verdict: 4/5 (watching)

Dog Days
MAL/Official
Genre: adventure, fantasy
Studio production: Seven Arcs
Number of episodes: 12
Comments: Downgrading nation war into athletic event is the dumbest thing I've ever seen in fantasy series. And this is what Dog Days is essentially about...It's a magical world, and like Zero no Tsukaima/MAR and many similar titles, our athletic hero Izumi Shinku was summoned from the modern day of Japan to the magical world, with the aim to help the nation of the summoner, Republic of Biscotti, a nation of dog, which was at the brink of being invaded by the nation of cat, Galette. But as stated earlier, the war in that world followed certain "rules/treaties" that prevent bloodshed (defeated soldiers turned into furball rather than dying), so it ended up as athletic event where soldiers poke each other, jumping and racing to the flag, and eventually the good part, "safe" combat battle with various kind technical skills and magical powers. So, the OP sequence is kinda deceiving, in a sense. I'm not even know whether to take this series seriously or not. Come on, would you say battles between factions in Takeshi Castle a war? There's twists involved (eg kidnapped princess, inability to return home etc), and unless the the story would deviate from the sporting event into some sort of proper war in a fantasy world (i.e. battles that didn't take place in the holy ground), I seriously would consider dropping this.
Verdict: 2.5/5

Yondemasu yo Azazel-san
MAL/Official
Genre: comedy, supernatural
Studio production: Production I.G.
Number of episodes: 12
Comments: Not sure if this really fit into a TV series impression, since each episode runs relatively shorter than average at 12 minutes per episode. The animation whatnot is average at best, and that's what expected for a gag show like this, but damn this series is awesome. I seriously ROFLOLMAO throughout the episode, and the last time I had this much laughter was when I watch Mitsudomoe (both seasons). The story is about a detective firm where a college girl Rinko Sakuma (Rina Satou) worked as part timer. Her employee, a “demonic” detective named Akutobe has the ability to summon demons from the netherworld. Things happened and to make it short, Sakuma ended up contracted with some of the demons which pretty much made her the master of those demons, instead of Akutobe. It is these demons that made the series epicly funny – depicted in funny deformed form, with unique personality. Azazel, a perverted demon of lust, specializes in sexual harassment but he often ended up screwing up the job. Beelzebub, a so-called prince demon, had the power to make any animal dump its load (aka shitting), though his real power is Bakuro – bringing anyone’s darkest, dirtiest secret to light. And also a scat freak, a shit-eating demon. A few more demons were later introduced, each with various fucked up abilities. This seriously is one the best comedy show I’ve watched, it's a shame that each episode runs for only a short 10 minutes.
Verdict: 5/5 (definite watch)

Seikon no Qwaser II
MAL/Official
Genre: action, supernatural
Studio production: Hoods Entertainment
Number of episodes: 13
Comments: Shamelessly, I admit that I like the first season ̄ー ̄ It’s not a good comparison, but I like the Mai-hime vibes that the first season had, especially near the final battle. The story, animation, music and battles were excellent, and considering the theme/essence of the series (Soma empowering Qwaser), it is inevitable that massive fanservices existed. Well I’d rather had it this way than series were the fanservices were added for the sake of fanservice (eg Kanokon, Sekirei etc). The first season ended in what I thought separate the manga halfway through, with Sasha and Mafuyu parting ways. Now in 2nd season, Sasha returned with a new mission: to infiltrate an all-girl Seirei Private Academy, and find a woman endowed with Madgalena of Thunder (which the Adept were also looked for). For this, he had a new Maria – Katsuragi Hana (Hikasa Youko), who apparently was dumped (lol) by Katja for awhile. He also had to disguise as female, named Alexandra Hel. Sasha’s fetish toward boobs never recedes, still a breast pervert as usual. This is probably the series I don’t mind giving impression based solely off episode 1, since I’d rather watch the “director’s cut” version, and it took time for them to be released. Seems like several new characters were added in this 2nd season, and I am looking forward for Mafuyu (Ayumi Fujimura) to make her (re)appearance again. The OP by Faylan and ED by Shoujobyo was nice, though I do secretly wished for Faerie Yui (aka Yousei Teikoku) to sing another... maybe not in this season.
Verdict: 4/5 (watching)

One more part to go.

The Impression Series: Spring 2011 [Part 1]

New anime season. Honestly at first I really don't plan to watch much series since I'll be graduating soon and actively involved with my job, while also occupied much with several ps3 games that I borrowed last March. But since I've finished most of the games in my wanted list (except a few newly released games and oldies like Eternal Sonata), I thought it's best to catch up with the recently aired Spring series. The March 11 earthquakes that struck Japan seems to partially disrupt the schedules of some of the series, which saw some series were only recently aired, while other went as far as the 3rd episodes. As usual, I somehow ended up watching many of the new series, although will likely drop a few later.

A rather massive list, might as well split it into a few parts. Randomly selected for first part of spring series impression.

Maria†Holic Alive
MAL/Official
Genre: comedy
Studio production: SHAFT
Number of episodes: 12
Comments: I had a good laugh when I watched the first season some seasons ago (despite the yuri/lesbian theme). A comedy series typical of SHAFT - the unique visual art and the presentation so funny matching that of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei that never failed to amuse me. The continuation tale of the pure (!), innocent (!), incurable perverted lesbian schoolgirl Miyamae Kanako in her quest to follow the footsteps of her parent who met each other in that high school, except this time what she seek is a female soulmate, aka a yuri partner...The jokes almost always centered around Kanako's perverse thoughts toward other female around her, as well as times when she had to endure Maria (the trap in the series)'s bullies. Fine comedy series.
Verdict
: 3.5/5 (watching)

Nichijou
MAL/Official
Genre: comedy, slice of life
Studio production: Kyoto Animation
Number of episodes: 13
Comments: "SELAMAT PAGI!" Honestly this single, simple greeting phrase used several times in ep1 and 3 were enough to (surprise) and attract me to the show. And then there's "selamat malam" and "sepak takraw" too (which apparently was also the case in the manga it was adapted from). Okay, back to what the series is about. It is a cute, light, slice of life comedy with simple and neat animation to complement the nature of the series. A robot with a corkscrew spring key at her back (and various "secret weapons" stored all over her body) created by a genius 8 years old girl, a friends of 3 schoolgirls that do random things, and some other weird people doing things in weird/funny/cute ways. This show is awesome, nuff said. It's random like many other comedy slice of life, but enough to make me laugh, good to relieve stress.
p/s: wow, who would have thought KyoAni would make a nice comedy series like this. Oh wait, they had one a few years ago (Lucky Star)
Verdict: 4.5/5 (must watch)

Astralotte no Omocha
MAL/Official
Genre: comedy, romance, supernatural
Studio production: Diomedea
Number of episodes: 12
Comments: aka Astralotte's toy. Kugimiya had another loli tsundere character Astrarotte Ygvar, a spoiled succubus princess, added to her rich collection. Nonetheless, The synopsis in MAL was rather...enticing, but I really doubt that was the focal point of the series. A succubus princess of fairy, magical world of Ygvarland who supposedly hates men because of childhood trauma, but as a succubus eventually she needs to suck the seed of life (guess what it is) out of man and create a harem of her own, or else she'll die. Then comes Touhara Naoya (Satou Rina voicing him kinda turned me off, really seems off), a normal human from a modern day world summoned to the fairy world to save the day... A rather unique and bold premise. I personally have nothing against the story, but at the same time I also don't really find anything interesting about it (although I do love fantasy series), so I guess this would be one of the series I don't mind not watching.
Verdict: 2.5/10 (most likely dropped)

Sengoku Otome~Momoiro Paradox~
MAL/Official
Genre: action, history, samurai
Studio production: TMS Entertainment
Number of episodes: 13
Comments: aka Battle Girls - Time Paradox. A schoolgirl, Yoshino Hide (aka Hideyoshi Toyotomi) somehow ended up drifting in an alternate dimension of Japanese warring era where only female exists; and she eventually aids Nobunaga Oda in her quest to collect Crimson Armors and conquering the land. An all-girl themed like this (and eg Koihime Musou) usually is not the kind of show that I would follow, but the 3 episodes I've watched so far had been pretty enjoyable, to say the least. Especially since even Hideyoshi herself addressed the peculiarities of the world where only woman exist, and even questioning how human in that world were born. Despite not having comedy as it's main genre, I personally find the series pretty amusing. Nobunaga Oda was a rather nice and considerate warlord (she'd even blush roflol); Mitsuhide Akechi (how did eyeglass exist in sengoku period is beyond me) was a bit tsundere; Yoshimoto Imagawa had personality exactly as I expected, at least from the Sengoku Musou game (laid-back, not serious, vulnerable to provocations, and "that" laughing etc); and even more funny moments from Shiro and Hideyoshi herself. The animation was good enough for me, and I really like the OP song. Interesting way to use post-ED/episode preview too. There seems to be director's cut version coming, but for now I do like the anime as it is (though a bit of flashing is nice too :3)
Verdict: 4/5 (watching)

Steins; Gate
MAL/Official
Genre: sci-fi, thriller
Studio production: WHITE FOX
Number of episodes: 12
Comments: One of the most anticipated series in my spring list. I’ve always like the mentally challenging theme used in Chaos;Head, and I expect Steins; Gate to deliver the same dose of mind-blowing twist. I’ve never had the chance to play the game (how I wish the game, which were released for ps3 and xbox 360 were translated), so the story was definitely a total mystery to me when I first watching the first episode. Wikipedia did somehow ease my understanding of the concept, in fact I ended up knowing things I’m not supposed to know (aka spoiled) about the plot… Well good thing the anime seems pretty faithful to the game. Anyway, the main theme of the story is time travel & paradox, where one day the main character Okabe RIntarou, ended up seeing many irregularities concerning things he did see but others didn’t and later discover that the microwave in his lab can perform time-traveling task and from then on, much plot twist occurred as more time traveling occurred. And hence many real life theories, devices & organizations were already thrown in the series mostly involves the concept of time & dimension (World Line, LHC, CERN (for SERN), Hund’s Rule etc). Heck, we might as well say the the game got such name is because of the time paradox occurring throughout the game (Stein's phenomenon). Having watched 3 episode, I could say that I’m liking what I’ve watched so far. Great animation, nice OP/ED songs (I’ve always like Sakakibara Yui’s FES/Phantasm Persona), and the voice acting was really amazing too (I really like Makise Kurisu (aka Christ)’s seiyuu. The characters also had intriguing/interesting personalities – a self-proclaimed mad male scientist who believes in time travel, a genius female scientist who didn’t believe in time travel (reminded me of Satou in NHK ni Youkoso, with all his belief in conspiracy), a hacker well versed in otaku culture (“your banana is all floppy” LOL), a clumsy girl who loves sewing cosplay costume, a TRAP miko, and many more. Chaos;Head was good, and so far I would say Steins; Gate was better. Definitely a show I don't want to miss.
verdict: 5/5 (definite watch)

Hanasaku Iroha
MAL/Official
Genre: drama
Studio production: P.A. Works
Number of episodes: 26
Comments: When I first read the synopsis and then watched halfway through episode 1, I thought it was an average drama series which normally didn't caught my interest (I admit episode 1 was a little depressing for me). But as I continue watching further episodes, I am starting to like the series. Having to cope up with carefree parent, the main character Ohana eventually had to move to her grandmother's inn to live, but life's not easy there (much less expected from her imagination), as her strict grandmother told she had to work at the inn to cover her living expense. And then it's pretty much drama all over the series, with a bit of comedies added to liven up the mood. The animation was absolutely beautiful, but really IMO the series is worth watching because of the message and moral story (finding one's self, and the concept of being independent and being able to depend on others), as well as the strong personality possessed by Ohana. Not to say other characters were not interesting since girls like Minko (I wish her seiyuu was someone else) had her moments too (trying hard to show her hate toward Ohana), and Nako certainly surprised me when her usually timid and shy attitude changed when it comes to swimming. A good watch so far.
verdict: 4/5 (watching)

That's it for part 1, there's still a lot more to come.

The Platinum Series: [7] Assassin's Creed II

*edit* 11/4/11, Platinumed : )

After finishing Resonance of Fate and completing most post-game quests for Star Ocean 4 International, I decided to try another game I borrowed from Reppu_Kiri, Assassin's Creed 2. As I mentioned many times before, I'm not really a big fan of western game, but it's not so bad to play this game for a change every once in awhile. The game was relatively short in length, and overall I could say that I'm liking the gameplay, and most of the story but the ending.

Title: Assassin's Creed 2
Developers: Ubisoft
Platform: PlayStation 3 (PS3), Xbox 360, Windows

Genre: 3rd person action-adventure

Release date: Nov 2009

Platinum Difficulty: 4/10

It's true that I still had yet to get a Platinum for this game because of one friggin trophy: Sweeper which required me to sweep 5 guards at once using a long range weapon. It's actually not a hard task, but somehow I've always get to sweep 4 guards at most after a lot of tries. I would definitely go back to this trophy once I get back to my PS3 in a few days.

*edit 11/4/11* And as mentioned, I finally got the final trophy yesterday, and hence the Platinum. It was not really that hard to get the Sweeper trophy after all: wear Auditore cap, lure the guards (one with a lance) to confined, narrow space/alley, disarm the guard and find the right timing for the sweep. And I got it in my first try lol.

Anyway, if I had to rank among games I've platinumed so far, I'd put Assassin's Creed 2 marginally below Atelier Rorona (which is also had 4/10 difficulty in my list). This is due to the fact that it's very, very easy to get many of the trophies in the games without much effort. There's only 1 missable trophy in the entire game (Fly Swatter), which shouldn't be a problem if we know the timeframe. Another slightly challenging Trophies involves finding and solving all subject 16's videos, as well as locating all 100 Feathers in the game, but that also was not that difficult with the help of proper guides. And lastly, the combat-related trophies, which can take time to master, but still not overly difficult.

Enjoyable games, with few minor problems

One of the stronger point of the game was the flamboyant and enjoyable gameplay. Being able to climb high place, performing high dive (aka Leap of Faith) in specific place into the bale of hay, and the various tricks and method to attack, ambush and kill: The quick way with dual hidden blade; the slightly slower way with poisonous blade; the "not-so-stealthy" way with hidden gun; or simply head on combat with long/short swords, maces, axes or unarmed. In combat, we could also disarm the opponent's weapon, evade their attacks and retaliate with counter kill. And this was even more enhanced by great graphic used in the game. There are a lot of side-missions available (racing to beat the thief's time; beat-em up to defend a woman's honor, a simple assassination contract etc), but to be honest I only did 1 of each (for the trophies), because completing them grant nothing but small amount of money, which we could obtained much more from our own income from the Villa Auditore chest. The mission of the main story can be repetitive at times (tailing, go to target location and kill etc), but it was compensated by the various method we could use to accomplish the mission. There's a lot more to the gameplay (bribing, blending, notoriety level, stealing, hiring people, puzzles etc) for our gaming experience.

*images credit to gamerspot*

Anyway, you know the 2 things I find annoying in the streets of Assassin's Creed2? The people carrying those boxes and the street musician (or whatever they called). A bothersome that if there's no guards around I'd bumped into them purposely and made their box crash/instrument fall. I mean, how can you easily get your hand slipped from the box just by a slight touch? And it's annoying when the musicians chase after me whenever they see me -__-

I've never played its predecessor so I had no idea what Assassin's Creed 1 like, but I heard that it had a poor ending, and that's exactly the same issue I had with AC2. I thought the Templar vs Assassin feud, which started way back since the era of Altair in AC1 were quite fascinating. Desmond Miles, a test subject 17 went into the Animus 2.0 to relive the memories of an ancestral nobleman Ezio Auditore da Firenze during his days in various place in Italy during the late 15th centuries, learning much about his days as assassin while also adopting Ezio's skills as his own. Throughout the story, we learnt about the conspiracy surrounding the death of Ezio's family, and eventually leads to an even bigger conspiracy, even bigger than the war between the Assassins and Templars. This is the point of the story (from Rome/Vatican onward), which IMO feels a bit awkward to me. Out of a sudden, the element of supernatural takes place, and talk about the creation of the world, the Apples and the Staff...wait what?

Overall Assassin's Creed 2 was quite a refined and enjoyable game to play. Not so short, but not that long either with fun gameplay, and lots of quest available. Some of the puzzles can be quite challenging if you attempt it without guide, and that's a plus. The pace of the story, especially near the end might be a turn off for some, but as a whole, AC2 was still a solid action adventure game worth playing. Oh, and somewhat easy to Platinum too.

p/s: title will be changed once I got the final trophy and Platinum this.

Star Ocean 4: So bad, yet so good

Back then when I used to play so many xbox 360 games, I've finished Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope TWICE, including beating both Gabriel Celeste and Ethereal Queen during my first playthrough. My second playthrough was to clean up most other trophies/quests/items I missed during my first play, unfortunately a game freeze glitch occurred when I was 6+ hours into my first Wandering Dungeon run in my second playthrough totally put me into total frustration, and since then I've never touched the 360 version : (

Well almost 1 year after, I finally decided to play the game again, this time for PS3 - Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope International. I know that someday I would replay the game again, hence I've pick the game together when I bought my PS3 early last year. And it was not until recent weeks that I started playing (after platinuming Dragon Age, then stopped midway to play Resonance of Fate).

Title: Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope International
Developers: Tri-Ace
Platform: PlayStation 3 (PS3)

Genre: role-playing games

Release date:
Feb 2010

The PS3 version, in short is just the slightly enhanced port of the 360 version, with few changes that made the game slightly harder. Among the notable changes include: Japanese and English voice option; Multi language text option; option to pick classic or modern interface; option to mute character/enemy's voice (god I LOVE this feature); and several in-game changes. These includes contents and element locks of some chests, addition of new treasure chests, and changes to some item creation recipe. I cant believe the simple Sacred Spear now required Crystall Skull to create -__- And lastly, the change to some Trophies, namely the Trophies for Battle Trophies. In 360 version, we're given a Trophy for each 10% of acquired BTs, but in the PS3 version, it's one every 15%, making the total Trophies for BTs collection to 7 (15%, 30%...90%, 100%) rather than 10 (10%, 20%...90%, 100%) in the 360 version.

One notable post-game change is that now Arumat's ultimate skill, Dragon Roar is now locked in a FLAME chest rather than Light in case of all other character's ultimate skill. Which means we now must travel all the way down to Gabriel Celeste's room to get the Water Ring before we can use it... I guess Tri-Ace knew how insanely strong this skills is that they decided to change the chest to flame so that players wont use cheap tactic of spamming Dragon Roar to clear the 7SD. Well didn't matter much to me, since I was mainly using Edge, Meracle and Sarah to run through 7SD, with the 4th interchangeable between Arumat and Reimi, and Bacchus in case of farming exp/fol against the Metal Scumbag, and Myuria in case of farming magical clay.

I'm using the Japanese voice throughout my run so far, and although they sound slightly better than the English version, some of the character's voice still annoyed the heck out of me. The option to mute character's battle voice certainly helped a lot to ease my annoyance toward the voice used. Guess who did I mute? Lyme, Sarah (For god's sake her character alone is quite annoying, luckily she was very dependable healer in battle) and Edge. I find Meracle pretty annoying in the English version too, but her Japanese voice isn't that bad, especially because she sounds a lot like one of my favorite seiyuu, Kitamura Eri (although it looked like she was voiced by different person with similar voice). I just wish we could also mute Welch's voice, OH AND MAYBE ALSO BRING SO3'S WELCH.

So Bad, Yet So Good
Yes, the game is that bad. A giant ball of cliche story, terrible plot twist that comes out of nowhere (hello Alternate Earth), lousy character and voice acting (hello Lymle and Sarah), awful dialogues that made me facepalm in every cutcenes. And yet here I am, still playing it and now sunk about 120 hours total into the game. Star Ocean 3 was terribad in in the 2nd half of the game, but Star Ocean 4 was 10 times worse - the character, the voice, the story. Yet the gameplay was so addicting that it somehow managed to make up for the catastrophic story/characters. The gameplay is just THAT good, probably one of the best JRPG battle system in recent years, maybe second only to Tales's (eg Tales of Vesperia) gameplay. The quests was massive, the item creation and equipment customisation were endless, and the extra dungeons were massive, added with some of the most difficult boss battles. I definitely had a lot of fun playing the game, I mean the gameplay. I guess Tri-Ace is just not good with developing good story but rather excels with gameplay (much like eg. Valkyrie Profile, Infinite Undiscovery and Radiata Stories), which alone warrant a reason to play SO4.

There's one scene/quest in this game that really touched me, made me sad comparable to the sadness of watching some of the sad scenes in NieR: the very last normal quest of the game, when we're asked to deliver a letter from someone in Nox Obscurus to his wife in EnII...really touch me that it almost made me cry to be honest.

Platinum Difficulty: 9.5/10

And the Platinum...well all I can say is getting Platinum is virtually impossible for me to get. Not because it was overly difficult- it's just that it will take extremely long amount of time to get Platinum - 400-500 total hours minimum simply because of the BT Trophies.

2 most broken skill in the game: Arumat's Dragon Roar and Reimi's Savage Sparrow, closely followed by X-Claw. Edge's Raging Strike is ridiculously powerful allowing you to deal max damage easily, but as it was a 1-hit skill, the damage is always capped at 99999 no matter how strong you are. Dragon Roar meanwhile can easily go over 200k damage in total, much eclipsing Raging Strike's damage output. So did Savage Sparrow too, which was even better considering the skill homes at almost all enemies in battles. And the most stupid ultimate skill: I'd say Lymle's Trinity Blaze and Bacchus's Godslayer.

p/s: Tri-Ace made awesome job selecting voice cast for Resonance of Fate (Both English and Japanese voices), I wonder if different people were in charge to select VAs for this game and RoF.

BT proress: Edge 78%, Reimi 78%, Faize 57%, Lymle 57%, Bacchus 69%, Meracle 72%, Sarah 66%, Myuria 67%, Arumat 61%. Total 605 BTs, 67% completion.
Quite a bit before I could reach the next BT trophies at 75%, aka 675 BTs.

The Platinum Series: [6] Resonance of Fate

For some reason I had a strong urge to replay Resonance of Fate since coming back to M’sia, although I’ve already finished the 360 version (albeit not getting 1000G). Earlier this year I had planned to borrow the PS3 version from Reppu_Kiri (in exchange for me lending him Valkyria Chronicles), but it was not until early this month that we had a chance to meet, which somehow turned into an informal gath for the gforumer peeps at Tenshi no Cafe at e@Curve, Damansara. Some Maid Café, insane food.

Anyway, I finally got to borrow the game, and immediately played it. My aim for this game is simple: getting a Platinum. I’ve played the 360 version and had the rough estimation on the difficulty of getting the Platinum. And after roughly one week (or 90 hours), I finally managed to complete it.

Title: Resonance of Fate

Developers: Tri-Ace
Platform: PlayStation 3 (PS3)
, Xbox 360
Genre: role-playing

Release date:
Jan 28 (JP); March 16 (NA); March 26 (EU) 2010

Platinum Difficulty: 6/10

Back then in the 360 I only failed (or too lazy) to get one trophy: Stardust Hunter which required me to achieve a Star in every single Arena rank, and that totaled to 500 battles which I must gone through. Easy strategy wise, but a very boring and tedious task because we need to repeat each rank 10 times to get a Star (total 50 ranks). Now for the PS3 version, I was determined to endure it, and after spending almost the whole day entirely at Arena, I finally managed to get it…well I guess this is nothing compared to getting 30,000 kills BT for Edge/Arumat in Star Ocean 4, which I would likely never try to attempt.

I like the score/statistic board for thisgame. Recording almost every single detail about the game. Oh, and that chapter stats were for the second playthrough, hence the 90+ hours for all of them.

Aside of Stardust Hunter, the rest of the trophy was relatively easy to do. I mean, it’s easy as long as you’re accustomed to the mechanic/gameplay of Resonance of Fate. Because mastering the gameplay itself is not easy because just like Tri-Ace’s phenomenal series Valkyrie Profile Silmeria, the game employs something entirely different than the usual turn-based or real-time combat that you found in most jrpgs. Mastering the combat mechanic takes time, but once you know how it worked, marching through the game is a breeze. Well, maybe except another Trophy: Kings of Neverland, which require you to clear the ultimate secret dungeon in the game, Neverland. This dungeon was pretty much like Tri-Ace’s Seraphic Gate or Wandering Dungeon, except that it was much more merciless. Even at level 200+ (max level is level 300), there’s no guarantee that you can pass the dungeon without casualties, because the enemies are THAT strong. Good thing the final bosses in Neverland were not that intimidating. It’s kinda funny because in my fight, I focused on R****a first by chaining max charged MG (Machinegun) and a few charged HG (Handgun) continuously, and that leave her completely stunned to her death. The other boss, S******n only employ physical melee attack, which cause 500-1000 damage (out of 13k-15k hp on my party at level 260+) at most thanks to the imbalanced Neversuit and Hi-Polymer Padding.

The definition of overlevelled. Vashyron almost had a leet hp lol

Since I’ve written almost everything on my mind about the game on many of my old posts when I played the 360 version, I guess there’s not much things for me to say about the game anymore. The ps3 version was pretty much the same as the 360 version. If anything, I’d say that the story remained elusive as ever. I still like the way the story was presented, but I certainly hope Tri-Ace could release something that could explain everything about the story (much like how Grimoire Nier book was released to explain much of the game’s backstory).

On a side note, I love Leanne :3

RD Replay of the Month - Back to action

It’s been awhile since I post anything about Dota, not since the conclusion of SGNDT 2010. Partly because since coming back from Australia, I had to wait till February for my PC to get shipped, and in the mean time, using a worn-out 5 years old laptop which didn’t have WC3 installed. 2 months without dota is a nightmare I tell you.

Anyway, that still didn’t prevent me from following the competitive scenes. Since the start of the year, much changed had happened, and by now I’ve almost completely only follow Chinese/Asian scene. Not that the European scene was uninteresting or something, it’s just that I simply lost my passion to follow their scene. Back to the Asian scene, there was quite a good number of games that catch my eyes, unfortunately some of the games didn’t have any replay available for download (so far). I’m referring to Chinese’s Lunar Cup which was featured some exciting games in the final between LGD and Nirvana.cn. The game was still available for view on youku, but I’m not sure if the replay was ever released.

One game that caught my attention recently was an ADC game of Scythe.sg vs AEON.MUFC.

Events: Asian Dota Championship (ADC) IV
    Maps/version: Dota-allstars 6.71b, version 1.24E
    GameMode: -cm
    Length: 80:48 minutes

    replay download: [gosugamers]

    rating: 7.5/10

It actually wasn't that long, since about 10 minutes of the total 80 mins were used for -cm drafting. Although it was not that epic compared to the classic LGD-EHOME encounter we've seen throughout last year, the game was still rather tense and interesting, especially the final 20 minutes. A close game.

From the picking phase, we've seen a clear intention of AEON to win by sheer carrying power of Medusa, supported by Invoker and Puck. Scythe had other idea though, as their final pick of Antimage provided the trump card against a farmed up Medusa. And Yamateh's Antimage did just that, also thanks to great combination with Hyhy's Tinker.

Medusa did the best he could, maxing her inventory real fast - Linken, Manta, Skadi, Butterfly; and by that point she was almost unkillable, but then made one mistake that cost them the game: buying a Divine Rapier (as a classic Medusa always did) and lost it very soon after. Not having a BKB against Tinker with Guinsoo and Antimage on the opposite side proved to be suicidal. She did have money for buyback, but recent changes with the addition of cooldown to Buyback means she couldn't afford to die a second time, which she did later when Scythe pushed to AEON's base, and hence unable to buyback, leaving their base open to demolition.
Scythe then went on to win the semi-final against LGD, and the grand final against Nirvana.my to lift the ADC season IV title.

On a side note, Lich as solo was... kinda good. Depend on situation I guess, but Sharky did a nice job playing a semi-carry Lich. In the end, he even had a rapier lol. Oh, and a bad invoker play.

The Platinum Series: [5] Dragon Age Origins

Dragon Age Origin was one of the few games I brought with me since returning from Aussie. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the biggest fan of a western rpg games like this, but nevertheless, I try to enjoy the game as much as possible. And as weeks went by, I find myself finishing 2 full playthrough2 of the game, one as a Mage and another as a Warrior. That surprisingly left me with just 1 Trophy left to Platinum: reaching level 20 as the third class, Rogue.

    Title: Dragon Age: Origin
    Developers: Bioware
    Platform: PlayStation 3 (PS3)
    , Xbox 360, Windows, Mac
    Genre: role-playing

    Release date: November 2009

    Platinum difficulty: 4/10.
Overall, I don't think any of the trophy in Dragon Age Origin was difficult to obtain. The slightly challenging one is probably the "Heavy Hitter" Trophy which require you to deal at least 250 damage with your character (we normally deals ~50-100 damage on regular attack/spells). Fortunately each class had certain skills that made this possible, such as Mana Clash for Mage and Arrow of Slaying for Rogue. Heck, we could even use the tome dupe glitch/exploit to pump our character's stats and easily deal the required damage with a simple normal attack. The Platinum was indeed relatively easy, but it still took quite some time to complete because it can took up to 3 playthrough (each for the 3 classes to reach level 20, which can range from 20-30 hours ), plus the 3 additional mini origin trophies (which took about 2 hours each) to achieve the platinum. Or, if you're simply want to rush, get the Awakening extension pack and easily get the level 20 Trophy in a matter of less than an hour, hence making the full Platinum requirement to just 1 playthrough.

Anyway, it took me two and a half playthrough to platinum this. My first playthrough was a mage, and although I didn't follow any proper walkthrough, I'm surprised that I coincidentally followed the recommended path to recruit the allies: Mage, Redcliff, the Elves and lastly Dwarf. But it was a so screwed up playthrough because I didn't know and missed so many things about the game. Missed Leliana at the Lothering, killed Wyne at the Circle Tower, not knowing that she was recruitable; missed getting Blood Mage specialization in my only chance as a mage, and more importantly, my skills and talents distribution was all over the place. My second playthrough as a warrior was better though, since I properly follow the walkthrough, and thanks to this, I managed a clean sweep at most of the trophies I missed in my first playthrough (including save and reload trick to side with both factions in each recruited allies, as well as the multiple endings). And to be honest, although at this point I only got 1 trophy left to Platinum, somehow I can't bring myself to play another playthrough as a rogue....until like a few weeks ago, when I finally decided to just speedrun the game, my final ever playthrough of Dragon Age Origin. Skip most cutscenes, did the Circle Mage and Redcliffe part. By then I was about level 10, but it was all that needed to reach level 20 on my rogue, thanks to the imbalanced gold glitch, which took me no less than 1 hour to jump from level 10 to 20, the Rogue Level 20 Trophy, as well as the Platinum. Well, at least for the main game, since it didn't count the DLC trophies.

    Other thoughts
Throughout the game I played mostly on either Casual or Normal difficulty (don't want to hurt my brain by playing on something like Nightmare). To be honest, there was a huge gap between these 2 difficulty, almost as if the Normal was geared slightly toward Hard mode while the Casual mode was an utter joke where it's almost impossible for you to die. I sure hope Bioware could at least balanced the game a bit.

One more thing, the game is glitchy as &^%@#$. It doesn't happened often, but when it did, it really annoyed me. I remember one very common glitch point that happened to me so many times , and that really pissed me off: the locked hall in Human Noble origin story, after the battle scene. On another note, the game also has a "good" kind of glitch - the gold and item dupe glitch, which allowed you to have infinite gold, and infinite tomes. And yes, I did (ab)use them for the lulz, in my third playthrough.

    Final thoughts
My final impression toward the game pretty much remained unchanged since I last made my first impression post: amazing story and great length of choices/options for players to choose, but as a whole, it definitely is not the type of games I'd thoroughly enjoy since my interest lies heavily toward jrpgs. Relatively easy Platinum though.

Umineko Episode 7: Requiem of the Golden Witch

And finally the penultimate episode of Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru: Requiem of the Golden Witch – a tale of Beato’s funeral. As in other Chiru arc, the aim of this episode is to provide the much needed answers to the many mysteries presented to the readers throughout Beato’s game in the first four game. From the last episode, we saw the conclusion of Battler and Beato’s fairy tale with a fitting ceremony between the two, which allows Beato to have an eternal, peaceful rest. In episode 6 and 7, we learnt 2 important points that could answers the many questions posed in Beato's game: the incident involving Natsuhi and a certain “baby” occurred 19 years ago, as well as the key phrase “without love, it cannot be seen”. These keys were thoroughly elaborated in Requiem of the Golden Witch, which eventually answers one, no, probably two main aspects of a mystery genre: “who dunnit” and “why dunnit”. The third aspect, “how dunnit” was partly answered in the Tea Party, but it was only one of the many possibilities existed in a cat box theory.

To be honest, it was hard for me to write this review because there are so many informations in episode 7, and arranging them in the most possible manner was quite challenging, especially since I was planning to make this review shorter than episode 6 (but in the end failed).

Will and Lion, the main protagonist for Requiem

As a start, there’s probably a need to clarify the 3 forms of Beatrice in the story: The first Beatrice, whom Kinzo met in his young day, the one that grant him the wealth of 10 tons of gold. The second Beato, which is the Kuwadorian Beato, whom Rosa claim to meet almost 20 years ago and accidentally fell off the cliff. She was the child of Kinzo and the first Beato, whom Kinzo belief is the reincarnation of the first Beatrice as she died right after giving birth to the second Beatrice. And finally the third Beato, which is the witch of Rokkenjima night and the legend of the Island.

Episode summary (spoilers and tl;dr ahead)

With Bernkastel as the new Game Master, she decided to use a new piece, a new character named Willard H. Wright (aka Will) to solve mysteries surrounding the death of Beatrice. Will is a former ace chief inquisitor of SSVD, who once known for his ruthlessness, but now a good detective/inquisitor who cannot ignore the heart contained in a particular case. After reading much of the fragments of the previous tales given by Bern, he was brought to a new fragment, a new alternate world, which promised so many irregularities. Oct 5th, 1986, yet it was a different scene at Rokkenjima, because what took place in the island on that day prior to the family conference is a funeral – held by Kinzo (who at that time was still alive) to officially declare the death of Beatrice. Will’s aim in this game is simple – finding the culprit that killed Beatrice.

Since Will had read through all previous fragment, he found so many peculiarities in this world. Aside from the fact that Kinzo is still alive, he also was introduced with a new unfamiliar character as his assistant throughout this game– Ushiromiya Lion, which in this tale is the adopted child of Natsuhi and Krauss, and the true successor of the Ushiromiya family selected personally by Kinzo. It's not even told what's the gender of Lion as Lion's appearance was rather androgenic, but later it was evident that Lion is a female. Will also noticed that some of the servants (eg Shannon) seems unfamiliar with Lion, which means he is not alone who find Lion's existence strange. Additionally, Battler didn't come to that year's family conference, while the portrait of Beatrice which was hanged at the main entrance was not accompanied by the epitaph of the gold. Lion also had no recollection of the witch's legend, or the epitaph.

Anyway, Bern already set up barriers around the area, so unless Will and Lion solved the mystery asked by Bern, they will forever be trapped in that area. Will was granted with “Theatergoing Authority” – a power that allows him to interact with the person he touched in another world. Will’s started to investigate by asking various questions from almost every family members of the Ushiromiya family, which unfortunately provided him with the information that he already know (eg Rosa’s meeting with the Kuwadorian Beatrice, and Maria’s obsession with cult and magic). His meetings with Kinzo however resulted in some of the most important backstory of Umineko – about the Kinzo’s past, his meeting with the first Beato (named Beatrice Castiglioni). Briefly, in 1944 Kinzo met Beatrice when the Italian Army submarine that she board made an emergency stop at Rokkenjima, which at that time was a military base. It was during those times that the two of them started to become affectionate toward each other. It was then revealed that the sub also carry the 10 tons of gold which belongs to the Italian army. Consumed by greed, both the Japanese and Italian officials on that island started killing each other, eventually leaving the only people who's not affected by the gold, Kinzo and Beatrice alive. Beato and Kinzo, In the end, the gold belong to Kinzo who survived the incident, who then build his fortune and brought the entire island, building 2 separate mansion for his family and Beato.

Now that Will had finished asking everyone, he’s ready to solve all the mystery of the death of Beatrice. This Beatrice actually refer to the 3rd Beato – the witch Beato of 1986, and not the Italian Beato, or the Kuwadorian Beato. Will explained that there are 2 culprit involved in the death of Beato – the human who can create and kill Beato (the living cat in the box), and the human who can kill the entire concept of Beato (the dead cat in the box). And to her surprise, the dead cat is Lion herself. Will deduce that Lion is the alternate persona of Beatrice, because way she didn't even know about the legend of the witch. Basically, Lion is the same exact child that fell over the cliff on the incident 19 years ago, caused by Natsuhi's rejection toward the baby. In this extraordinarily rare fragment, somehow Natsuhi accepted the baby and the baby went on to live to be the present Ushiromiya Lion. It was also mentioned that Lion is actually the child of Kinzo and the Kuwadorian Beatrice, which can only mean one thing - due to her sheer resemblance toward her mother Beatrice Costiglioni, Kinzo committed the forbidden sin of impregnating his own daughter - the Kuwadorian Beatrice, and resulted in the baby that is Ushiromiya Lion. That explains the strong affection that Kinzo had toward Lion. And hence, Lion's existence virtually wipe the necessity of having the legend of the witch Beatrice, because Kinzo already had something important to him, which is Lion. Nevertheless, Kinzo deeply regretted his mistake and vow to atone for his sin by making Lion a proper Ushiromiya Head, or in other fragment, apologize with all his heart to the revived Beatrice before having his last breath.

With the mystery behind Lion's existence unraveled, it's time for Will to expose all the secret and truth behind the mysterious murder of Rokkenjima on 1986. For that, he asked the "culprit" to come forward and reveal the motives - the "why dunnit" aspect of the mystery. The motive, the reason why the culprit had to commit a game-like crime on Oct 5th 1986, putting even her own fate on the line. Another new character was introduced to personify the culprit - Clair vauxof Bernard. Clair then told a tale of her life which reveals the events from her early days to the moment when she solved the epitaph of the gold and become a true witch, which eventually leads to the motive of the mass murders. Her tale was told in 9 chapters in total.

Her tale began when she was chosen to become a servant at the Ushiromiya house at the very young age of 6 – although in actual she was 9 years old. The servant, known as Yasu, was the exact same baby that fell off the cliff 19 years ago. Somehow she miraculously survived albeit with grave injuries. Genji, fearing the worst possible future if Kinzo would commit the same sin again, decided to lie about the baby being dead. This whole tale of course would not happen if the baby did not fell off the cliff. Due to her young age, she still was lacking the necessary skills to do the regular work, so she often only helped other servant, while also completing her school. The fact that she became a servant at such a young age made other regular servants feeling uncomfortable, and for that reason, she was often scolded for her clumsiness and the way she often forgot to put her things. Until one day when she met and made a friend with a witch who often hides things she lost, named Beatrice (though in fact, she was Gaap in the appearance). Since the witch often pranks her, Yasu asked Kumasawa for an advice to avoid losing things. The charm she learnt from Kumasawa (string attachment and “omochikaeri” charm) drastically changed her as the witch often unable to hide her stuff anymore. At the same time, Yasu also developed interest for mystery novels.

Some years later, an incident totally changed her life. One day, she was introduced with the wonder of magic by Gaap, which totally charmed her and made her changed her way of life. That night, she told her roommate, Shannon (who is her ideal servant and was very close to her) that she want to quit as a servant and become a witch. And in that instant, she become a witch, erasing her memory from Shannon. And from that onward, Yasu become Beatrice, while the old Beatrice become Gaap. Beatrice feel content with what she had as a witch so far, but she still lacked something, as thought by Shannon – love.

It was somewhere in 1980, 6 years untill the Rokkenjima murders. The scene then switched, showing Shannon having a chat with “someone”, talking about mystery novel. It was a teenager’s chat, but eventually ended as what Shannon thought was a love confession, along with a certain promise made by that “someone”, saying that he will return with a white horse to take Shannon away on the next year. It was this incident that triggers the great misfortune on 1986. And that "someone" is none other than….Battler.

That year too, Battler’s “mother” Asumu died, and Battler got very upset that Rudolf immediately remarried to Kyrie, as if disrespecting his deceased mother. For that, Battler decided to forsake the Ushiromiya family and live with his grandparent of her mother side. Due to this incident, Battler did not attend the family conference for the next 6 years, completely forgotten about the promise he made with Shannon. One year after another, Shannon kept on waiting for Battler to the point that she suffers dearly from her love sickness. Added to her pain, Beatrice aka Yasu kept on saying that Battler would come back to Rokkenjima someday, giving a false hope to Shannon. Until 3 years later, on 1983, when Battler wrote each of the cousin letters, but completely forgotten to write one for Shannon. Her final strand of hope finally crushed when in one of the letter, Battler said he didn’t plan to return to Rokkenjima…For all these years, Shannon has been a living dreamer, creating illusion that is the promise made with Battler that she misunderstood as a confession.

Hence, Battler’s sin is not that he forgot the promise he made, it’s just that he simply didn’t remember making that promise. She’s unable to hate Battler, since he didn’t even break his promise, and this really hurt her feeling, because as long as she love Battler, her pain will always continue. Beato who feel guilty for giving Shannon false hope, decided to release Shannon from her pain, and hold Shannon’s bud of love to herself so that she can learn one aspect she lacks – love. And for that, she will also be the maiden in love with Battler and wait for his return to Rokkenjima in place of Shannon…

A year later, another miracle occurred as Beatrice somehow managed to solve the difficult riddle of the epitaph of the gold. It all started when Kinzo ordered the portrait of Beatrice to be hanged at the main entrance, along with the epitaph. Beato decided to try solving the riddle. It was indeed a very difficult riddle, which took her days to find clue and answers. That eventually led her to the Golden Land – the underground VIP room unlocked after she solve the riddles, along with the 10 tons of gold inside the room. Genji then came to congratulate her, saying how miraculous was it that the one who solved the puzzle is none other than Beatrice – Kinzo’s descendant herself. That brought her to Kinzo study, where Kinzo announced that she would become the new Head, and then deeply apologized to her for his past mistake (incest), and ask for her forgiveness. With that, Kinzo has no more regret in life, and passed away soon after. Nevertheless, Beato didn’t want to be the new Head as she already got what she want – learning about who she is. For that reason, she wish to remain her usual self, while Krauss becoming the new head. After all, her heart still was missing a piece – the return of Battler…

As a last resort, Beatrice finally decided to abandon everything and leave everyting to the choice of the roulette of fate, and the roulette chose the specific date – those days in 1986 as the day where absolutely no one could escape if the epitaph was not solved again. And with that, Clair/Yasu/Beatrice’s confession is over. Before she gave her final farewell, she want to entrust her final moment to Will – so that he could solve all the mystery behind the crimes in her games, as the last rite of her burial. And with that, Beatrice/Clair/Yasu’s tale had finally ended, all her riddles had ben “solved”, leaving her with no regret. Inside her coffin, there was the game tale written by Battler, which was probably the happiest possible tale for Beato – full with love and happy tale, most fitting tale to put in her coffin.

The funeral is over, and Bern released the barrier. With that, the core story of Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru: Requiem of the Golden Witch ended, and the funeral at the chapel Is adjourned…

    ...............................

Man, this whole thing feels like Battler is the bad guy for making a girl cry. But its kinda funny that a misunderstanding between Battler and Shannon triggered all these massacre. Now the phrase that was so popular in episode 6: “Without Love, It cannot be Seen” made a lot of sense

Nevertheless, this game really give me a lot of surprise, but mostly in a good way. So many irregularities and inconsistencies right from the start. New character Will aka Wright. Beato’s funeral. Ushiromiya Lion. The Future Head, with Lion chosen instead of Krauss. The Silver Ring of the Head. Shannon stuttering, looking unfamiliar with Lion. Kinzo’s presence at the funeral when he’s supposed to be dead at that time (1986). Piece Battler not attending. Epitaph of the gold and legend of the night witch not existing. Lion’s existence was looked to be forced upon by Bern that it create many irregularities, even to the point of causing confusion to the dining table seat arrangement. But her existence also explains a lot of the mysteries in Umineko, since she was the other side of the coin (dice?) that represent Beatrice, Yasu, and of course, Clair herself.

A lot of answers were explained in logical manner, with little interference from magical perspective. The source of Kinzo's gold, the answer to the epitaph, the three versions of Beatrice, and most importantly, the "promise" that become the motive of the crimes on 1986. This episode looked better than ep6 because we’re served with something new and fresh. Free from the game board duel of reasoning. No more pointless word games (unless if you count the epitaph solving part). Will and Lion’s presence really made this episode interesting. Will was pretty incredible himself. He claim to simply skimming the notes of previous episodes given by Bern, but he still know much detail about them. He was also a rather tactless and unmannered man, but that kinda made it funny to see whenever Lion try to correct his manner (and Jessica's) of speaking to the relatives by pinching his butt.

Aaaaaand, another theme of this episode is…..WINCEST. I kinda suspected it at first, but wow Lion’s history definitely left me with a big gap on my mouth. Not often you find a novel, a game or a story that deal with this kind of incest. Kinzo got Beatrice pregnant with Kuwadorian Beatrice, then due to his burning passion and obsession, he got that Kuwadorian Beatrice pregnant with Lion. And hence, Lion is both Kinzo’s child and Beartice’s Grandchild. Would be “interesting” if there’s a fragment where Lion is accepted and Kinzo commits the same sin again. Nevertheless, Kinzo's past story about how he met Beatrice Castiglioni (nicknamed Bice lawl) was a really interesting one, perhaps one of my favorite moment in this episode. Those scene remind me to the current Battler-Beato (especially since the young Kinzo really resembles Battler). At least we know how deep Kinzo's love for Beatrice and why he looked like a madman trying to revive her. “I wont let you die. Take some responsibility. After all, you’re the one kidnapping me”. Damn nice line XD

The part in Clair's story when it was reveled that Battler made some promise with Shannon really surprise me. I mean, the person Shannon talked to was never shown, and it totally made me think that she was talking with George (without considering the person's interest in mystery novel). I decided to go along the story anyway, then its explained why. That's one of the biggest psychological mindplay that I’ve been tricked into. It feel weird to see magical element stil fused with Shannon and Yasu life story, because if Shannon was the one that made the promise with Battler, then it also partially made her the main culprit. But in this story we're shown that magic still involved when Shannon transferred her love to Yasu, implying that Yasu, the child of Kinzo and Kuwadorian Beatrice was totally responsible for the crime. Poor for her though, since the one she wanted to understand (Battler) didn’t, while the person she didn’t know (Will) did understand.

The Epitaph of the gold was revisited again. In episode 3 and 5, we’ve learnt quite a lot of hint when Eva and Erika discussed about the word play involved in the creation of the epitaph, and it was indeed a beautifully crafted riddles. This time, it was the Beato originated from Yasu, aka Lion’s alternate self were able to solve the riddle, with Will playing the role of explaining the intricate details of the solution to the riddles, from the way they start searching the Taiwan map, to the key word of Danshui Line, Qilian and Quadrillion. Indeed, a very complicated riddles.

Will’s answers to Clair's riddle of the murder in the Beato's game were rather confusing (all with Illusions to Illusions and Earth to Earth). But then, it doesn’t mater what method the culprit use to kill, because in the end, almost everyone died and that’s what matter. It’s like a cat in the box. Regardless of the red truth etc, nobody from outside know in what situation the victims were found etc, only those survived, and then died knew. When we open the box, we get a tale where no one except Eva survives. And since Eva died without saying anything, all the truth is shut inside the cat box, leaving anything possible with endless possibilities. Hence that’s why the motive or the “why dunnit” was heavily focused throughout this episode.

Will’s had show that Beato's fantasy is a mystery. In a way it was good that it’s sensible, but also, not that good because we still wish to know the method of murder, the tricks etc, even if they all are mere fakes. And all in all, the core episode of Requiem of the Golden Witch ended with a good note. That was the case, until the Tea Party. It was a damn long Tea Party, which is still part of Bern's tale, although she was no longer the Game Master. And it tells how the murder in the Island could be conducted from human point of view, with Rudolf and Kyrie becoming the main culprit. With Lion and Ange spectating the show, it become a painful experience for both, especialy Ange who was forced to see her parent committing murders and even seeing Kyrie admitting she didn't even love Ange. Of course, this is one of the endless possibilities inside the cat box. But after reading through the Tea Party, I don’t even know what’s right and wrong and it got me confused =_=

The episode was ended with the final segment of the Extra, which showed Battler visiting the lamenting Ange who didn't attend the family conference in 1986, and consequently lost her entire family. Battler finally promised to tell the truth of Rokkenjima on that day of 1986, and promised that it's not to be a sad or painful story. The final game, made just for Ange, awaits us in the Twilight of the Golden Witch, answering much of the "how dunnit" aspects of mysteries of Rokkenjima murders.

    Great episode overall.
