Valkyria Chronicles 2 - and the Gallian tale continues

Got my hand on the English version of this game right on the day of English version release, although it's not until like a week later that I actually started playing this game. My first plan is to finish PS3's Valkyria Chronicle before I play this game, but since my schedule is getting busier and spare me little time to play the first game (currently at Chapter 9), and hence I just decided to go with the PSP's Valkyria Chronicles II. I reckon I won't missed that much from the PS3 game since I've watched the anime, although there are some interesting scenes/ dialogues that I recall from the game which weren't included in the anime.

Valkyria Chronicles II is a tactical role-playing game developed and published by Sega for the PlayStation Portable. Released in 2010, it is the sequel to Valkyria Chronicles. Set two years after the onset of the Second Europan War, the game's story focuses on a military academy cadet school as they seek to prevent an ethnic cleansing campaign by a ruthless rebel group.

Two years have passed since Squad 7 defeated Maximillian in Gallia during the Second Europan War. A rebel group made up of dissatisfied aristocrats and like-minded soldiers and citizens calling themselves the Gallian Revolutionary Army begins a civil war to wage an ethnic cleansing campaign against Gallians of Darcsen descent. However, with the intense fight against the Empire having left Gallia's regular army in an exhausted state, there is initially little to stop the insurrection from gaining momentum. Laws preventing the formation of a national militia to fight fellow Gallians force the government to deploy military academy cadets to the front lines in order to combat and defeat the GRA forces. Among the students sent out on the field is 17-year-old Avan Hardins, a young man who enrolled in Lanseal Military Academy after the death of his older brother, Leon.

Developers: SEGA

Platform: PlayStation Portable (PSP)

Genre: RPG

Release date: Jan 2010 (JP); August/September 2010 (ENG)

Currently I'm in the month of August story, which seems to be halfway through the game and more importantly, the time when battle difficulty seems to get harder.

As mentioned, the game took place 2 years after the conclusion of Valkyria Chronicle (PS3). Peace arrived at Gallia after Welkin's Squad 7 managed to repel the Imperial's invasion, only but for a short moment as rebels started to emerge after knowing the fact that the ruler of Gallia, archduke Cordelia is a Darcsen (Darcsen is a taboo race in this game which was thought to bring calamity), aiming to clean the country off Darcsen. We take a role of Avan Hardins, a cadet in Lanseal Military Academy who enrolled in order to find the truth about his brother's death. He was then appointed as the president of his class, which essentially equals to his squad during battles.

So far I have to say that I'm really loving the game. Rather than the full military camp setting used in Valkyria Chronicles (VC), now in Valkyria Chronicles 2 the game opted for (military) student life in military academy. The story itself was interesting and have lots of humours involved. As Avan, we leads our class supposedly consist of rejects, bring them together and overcome obstacles in battle through each missions, spanning from January to...I guess November or December (Persona much?). New stories with new (and lovely) characters, added with great improvement in gameplay department while pretty much utilizing similar graphic from the previous VC1. What more you could ask for a PSP game?

The gameplay retains pretty much most of the principles from Valkyria 1, but with a lot of improvement being made which imo made the strategically easier and fun to play. For one, you don't have to wait 1 whole turn before you can deploy someone from the base camp in battle. I find this tremendously useful because it made battle planning more flexible because now I can deploy and retreat someone to fit the battle needs. Your classmate will also not going to DIE PERMANENTLY if they're defeated in battle and you're unable to rescue them, like what happened in VC1. At worst, they will only be hospitalised for 3 days (meaning you can't use them for 3 missions).

gameplay of VC2, showing one of the mission in mid-game.

Another interesting changes from VC2 is that now we can upgrade classes. In VC1, there are 5 basic classes - Scout, Trooper, Lancer, Engineer and Sniper and that's it. In VC2 though, you have 5 basic classes - Scout, Trooper, Lancer, Engineer and Tech; and then you can even upgrade each into more classes. For example, a Scout can be changed into sniper or scout veteran. Trooper into Trooper veteran or Gunner, which further divided into two more advanced classes. In all, there are a total of 20 different classes in VC2, emerging from the 5 basic classes. Heck, there's even an Anthem Corp class, which roles basically to bufff/debuff. Of course, those variety of classes means that battle is more challenging and require more strategic usage of each classes. Though in the end, you'll pretty much end up using Scout/Trooper and a bit of Lancer more than the rest. On the enemy side, though, you will occasionally face some annoying enemies called V2, which basically is a pseudo-Valkyrie (omg). They have the power of Valkyrie, good thing they're not as invincible as the true Valkyrie and can be taken down with proper ways.

Other aspect about the gameplay that I would like to comments:
  • I notice that the Sniper in VC2 is significantly more reliable than in VC1. I remember back then cursing Marina a lot of time because she missed a headshot and waste 1 CP. In VC2 sometimes the snipers do miss, but not as annoyingly often as in VC1.
  • You can only have a maximum of 6 units in battle at a given time. Make sense, considering now we can deploy and recall our units at ease.
  • More environment integration - the vehicle (aka Edelweiss of VC1) in VC2 can be customised to fit your situation, and it really helps a lot to have them in fights. They can now carry units inside them (useful to bring low-AP units over a long distance) break large rocks/ice, put a ladder/bridge to create shortcut, and even can nullify environment effect through proper device installed. And some of the custom body part also made them cost only 1 CP in battle - a huge buff to tank usage.
  • We can no longer save in battle, but hey, it doesn't take long to reload the game if you screw something up.
  • Multiplayer. A new feature where you can co-op with friend to do mission together, or even just dueling squad vs squad for fun. Though I personally never tried this.
  • It's feels very rewarding when we manage to get an A-rank in a mission after much planning for the best strategy to beat that particular mission.

What else. Characters. I would say that the characters in VC2 are more appealing to me than those in VC1. Yeah yeah VC1 got Edy Nelson, but hey, VC2 got her sister Anisette Nelson, plus Edy herself made her cameo in Anisette's side story. You can even unlock Edy to be included in your squad. How awsm is that :3 Simply put, in VC2 you can get a better understanding of each of your classmate through their own side story, and this is unlocked simply by deploying them in mission a few times. They're optional, but useful if you want your classmates to unlock powerful Potentials.

Many characters from VC1 do make their cameo in VC2 - Welkin, Alicia and Edy are the prime examples. You can even use codes to unlock extra characters for your squad - Welkin, Alicia, most of squad 7, Faldio, Isara, and of course, SELVARIA : D (unfortunately she got toned down a lot, including her *eherm*) And honestly some of them are better than those you have in your squad, too bad they didn't have side story. Would be weird if Isara actually have a side story, huh.
Oh yeah, don't forget about the Valkyries too as they're still here in VC2.

Overall although many didn't like the fact that VC2 is released for PSP, I have to say that being in PSP didn't really effect the greatness of this game. Nice graphic with beautiful character art, a lot of gameplay improvement and customization and nice story (albeit some predictable twist). Definitely recommended for jrpg lovers, although I would say you might want to watch the anime (or better, finish VC1) first before you play this game, if you don't want to be spoiled.

Kenka Banchou - the way of the Badass

Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble is a PlayStation Portable beat 'em up video game released in 2008 in Japan and 2009 in the United States. It follows the efforts of a Japanese "bancho" (delinquent) and his efforts to become Japan's top bancho by beating up all the other regional banchos during a field trip.

The game takes place on a school field trip to the fictional city of Kyouto. Focusing on Takashi, a bancho of the same school, unwillingly goes with his class as he is told that he will fail the school year if he does not attend. He meets up with his best friend and loyal ally, Yohei, and soon meets with other friends as well riding on the train. When they arrive to Kyouto Station, Yohei accidentally knocks into another bancho. After a swift fight between Takashi and The bancho, Takashi learns that all schools are visiting Kyouto for one week and there are 47 banchos in all fighting together in a contest seeing who is the "toughest guy in all of Japan". Takashi, now persuaded to stay with his class, takes on the challenge to be the toughest guy in Japan.

Title: Kenka Banchou: Badass Rumble
Developers: Atlus

Platform: PlayStation Portable (PSP)

Genre: Beat 'Em Up

Release date: Nov 2008 (JP); Nov 2009 (ENG)

As mentioned somewhere before, this is supposed to be next game in my now playing list, away from home. I've actually planned to play this game long before I finished playing Persona 3 Portable, but it's not untill a few days ago that I was able to get the taste of this game - Kenka banchou: Badass Rumble.

The concept is simple - your main character (default name is Takashi), a badass gangster in your region of choice (I choose Saitama btw) is on a field trip to Kyouto for a few days. Supposedly students go there for education and fun, but for Takashi (that's you!), it's a matter of becoming number 1 Banchou in Japan, since other Banchou from other region in Japan also came to Kyoto around that time of the year. Using this opportunity, you wondered around the city during your few days of field trip, tracking down street punks for their student's itinerary and hence clues of other Banchou's whereabouts, so that you can beat em up and increase your Banchou rank. Sounds like a nice concept, isn't it? I for one am loving this Japanese high school sim *coughpersonacough*.

I personally haven't advance that far into the game, only on my 2nd day of the Kyoto trip. Basically your trip activity is divided into 3 stages - early, afternoon and evening. During that time, you're supposed to visit the likes of Kinkaku-ji, Tenryu-ji, Nijo Castle etc by traveling around the city with bus, train or taxi. Well, you do visit those place, but as mentioned, it's to look for street punks and Banchou and beat em up. This is when the combat system kicks in, which in a way kinda disappoints me. First you need to "Stare" them with your menacing glare to initiate the battle, followed by a mini-game to gain initiative in battle. Then the brawling started. Initially you're limited to a basic 3-combo punch and kicks, followed by a special move which is unique to the region you choose. As you levelled up (by beating them punks and other Banchou), you gain access to more skills and moves and are able to customize your skillset to suit your fighting style. Jump onto them, punch the face, high spin kicks, there's a lot of them for you to choose. Problem is, the battle progress is kinda dull, and players are a little slow to react. Well, they ARE amateurs fighters after all...

Gameplay sample of Kenka banchou. As the game advance you'll learn even more moves.

Takashi as a character is also quite interesting. He's a banchou which code of honours - although he's a total badass, he doesn't mindlessly cause trouble. Added to that, he could even score some chicks, and having good times with some school girls in the game (who actually are interested in him rather than the opposite).

Overall the game is also fairly short (several days of field trip in Kyoto, compared to 1 whole friggin year in Persona), but it seems like you can replay the game with everything carried over so that you can rack up your Banchou level to the top. I have to say that the game was quite appealing to me, I'm enjoying Takashi's badass life as well as the comedies they actually put well through out the game. Fun game, although probably not everyone's taste.

p/s: Man this sounds like I'm making a full review of the game...

RD's replay of September - the epic clash of Giants

Quite early for this month's replay, but since someone suggested me to cover this game, I guess I might as well do it now.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The merge of Nirvana+Kingsurf, which essentially saw 2 of the best dota player in Malaysia - Yamateh and Mushi combining force to take on arguably one of the best dota team in the world, LGD in Asian Dota Championship. Granted both team are currently rather unstable (2009 retiring and Sharingan return for LGD, while rumors lingering about Yamateh's imminent retirement for Kingsurf), they actually managed to put quite a spectacular show in this game.

I actually don't know how to express my feeling toward this game. It was certainly a highly recommended game to watch. Yamateh is back with his sick Shadow Fiend, while Mushi with Lion also performed spectacularly. On LGD, ZS-"rightclick"-MJ's Drow is getting his usual farm, while Sharingan's Enigma poses threat all day to KS. LGD had the advantage in tower, and they even managed to get mid and top raxes. But when it come to team clashes, Kingsurf showed their ruthless determination to defend the base, repelling almost every single of LGD's attempt, partly thanks to VS's swap every time Enigma blink in and ulti.

Despite the kill advantage, KS was forced to camp to defend their base, and when the time arise, it was then the mistake kicks in, which arguably decides the outcome of the game. As KS tried to push mid, VS went to swap ZSMJ's drow but ZSMJ managed to escape with BKB. Now that VS's swap in cooldown (and hence can't cancel Enigma's ulti), Enigma blink in and ulti, catching FOUR KS's heroes, killing them all and ultimately ended the game.

Overall, a really awesome game to watch, and a heartbreaking outcome for Kingsurf fan. KS looks like they could make a comeback in this game but a single mistake in team battle ended their abition. Despite that, LGD actually are quite comfortable throughout the game although they're behind in hero kill. In the end, as this round is played in 2 games, botht eam got a draw as KS won the first game earlier.

Fall 2010 Anime List

Winter almost come to an end, and within a few weeks the spring blooms and the Fall arrived.

TV Series

OVA/OAD/ONA

Moves/Film

sources: chartfag, whosubwhat etc

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

If this is really the full list, damn that's quite a lot, although some of them are merely filler to the big series that are going to be aired. bad time for me though, since this fall season is going to be the busiest time in my honours year, with research project need to be completed, seminars, thesis writing blablabla.

Anyway enough of that. I personally don't really lurk that much these day so I'm not that familiar with almost half of the series this fall. But certainly, some really did caught my attention. For now, if there's nothing else to hinder me, my must-watch-list are going to be Bakuman, Hakuouki 2, Kaminomi, Tegami Bachi 2, ToAruIndex 2 and of course (probably) the most overhyped show this fall, Ore no Imouto. I'll still be on the lookout on other series, like IkeMusume, SoreMachi, YosugaSora, and maybe Arakawa. Not sure I'd looking forward to Hyakka Ryouran (massive e). Others: the first season kinda turn me off, so I guess I won't be watching Sora Otoshimono 2. Same goes with TLR 2.

Since watching her short version PV, I've been waiting for this single for how many days, it sure took quite a few days before I can finally find the full single. Anyway this single just made my day, her songs are getting better and better. From One to Baptize and now this, I really like their recent singles post-Gothic Lolita Doctrine. Should there be a third Gothic Lolita series, I bet it would be an epic compilation, hopefully greater than GL Propaganda :3

P3P Fever

It took me roughly 3 weeks (almost all while playing in the bus and in bed before sleep -_-) to complete my first playthrough of Persona 3 Portable - the first of maybe a few more playthrough, probably. Playing as Female main Character (FemMC in short), indeed it gave me a rather new perspective and experience as the game claimed. I mentioned "first" playthrough because I planned to replay the game again somewhere near the future - as MaleMC. Although MaleMC are pretty much similar to the storyline back then in Persona 3 FES, there's a few reason for me to replay the game as MaleMC though.

1) I only play as FemMC on Hard mode (for the sake of item carrying over to New Game+), so next time I want to play the MaleMC route on Maniac (item can't be carried over to next playthrough).

2) I only got 99% Persona compendium completion in my FemMC playthrough, and the remaining 1% cannot be gained in any way from that playthrough, because that 1% persona can only be obtained in MaleMC route (Susano-O MaleMC version). Hence why the MaleMC route I decided to play next.

3) I still haven't finished a few quests in my FemMC playthrough; namely some of the front doors in Vision Quests (Power and Speed door I believe), as well as defeating the "Ultimate" boss, T******e at the top of Monad. Although I managed to fuse the ultimate persona Orpheus Telos, I still haven't trade item for Armageddon, which is totally needed to defeat him. Hence I just decided to do these unfinished task in my next playthrough.

4) My Orpheus Telos and Messiah skill kinda sucks...I don't mind Orpheus since it won't be carried over to NG+, but I definitely want to try fusing Messiah later because he didn't inherit any of the "final 4 spells" - Thunder Reign/Ragnarok/Nilfheim/Panta Rei, which I want badly...

My rating for each Social Link in P3P, FemMC:
  • Fool (everyone in SEES) - 5/10 -Auto-rank up, storyline and nothing really memorable
  • Magician (Junpei) - 9/10 - although Junpei's character is kinda meh, but I have to say his Social Link is one of the best in P3P, even without Lovers route (though we can still become Lovers later in the game)
  • Priestess (Fuuko) - 6/10 - Nothing really changed compared to P3FES afaic. Cooking, cooking and cooking.
  • Empress (Mitsuru) - 7/10 - I didn't fully complete my Empress SL in FES, but it doesn't look any different in P3P FemMC either. her responsibility as Kirijo next head, arranged marriage etc...
  • Emperor (Hideyoshi)- 8/10 - For some reason I like this SL. Hideyoshi as a person can be a pain in the ass at the beginning, but later I really like the way he changed.
  • Hierophant (the old couple)- 6/10 - Again, little to no change from FES.
  • Lovers (Yukari)- 6/10 - So...why Yukari remained as Lovers even after we play as FemMC? The story of her SL also didn't changed much compared with FES, minus the obvious lover's route (duh yuri)
  • Chariot (Rio)- 9/10 - Nice to see new character. Rio ♥♥♥ I like the final 3, 4 ranks of this SL, when Rio admitted his love for Kenji and thereafter scenes :3
  • Justice (Ken)- 2/10 - FFFFFF the SL that I didn't favor the most. Seriously what's with this lovers relationship between a 16-years old high school student with some 12 years old boy? In the end I'd rather stick with friend relationship... WHERE'S MY CHIHIRO щ(゚Д゚щ)
  • Hermit (Saori) - 6/10 - New character, but not much in this SL that interest me.
  • Fortune (Ryouji) - 4/10 - Now we can form lovers route with Ryouji, but I personally don't like Ryouji as a character, so I just stick with being friend. Well at least better than Ken's SL.
  • Strength (Koromaru) - 7/10 - spending time with dog, huh. Well at least the SL brought back the memories of Koro's deceased owner.
  • Hanged (Maiko) - 6/10 - Nothing changed from FES. Some little girl getting frustrated at her parent's argument and feel like running away. p/s I heard that we can form lovers with her in MaleMC...ZOMG
  • Death (Pharos) - 5/10 - Same as Fool, automatic events and nothing significantly interesting.
  • Temperance (Bebe) 6/10 - Same as in FES, except some options I remembered the first time when he asked how to say "farewell" in Japanese.
  • Devil (Tanaka) - 6/10- Same as FES, again.
  • Tower (Mutatsu) - 6/10 - Same as FES, again.
  • Star (Akihiko) - 9/10 - Better than FES, now with Lover's route available. Kinda funny to see Akihiko getting embarrassed everytime they went to eat ramen, while the FemMC getting some vicious glare from those girls who always chase Aki :3
  • Moon (Shinjiro) - 10/10 - Probably my favorite SL in P3P. The best part if when he cook for everyone at the dorm, and during the extra scene, we even have the option to become lovers...how nice. Too bad he...he... ;_;
  • Sun (Akinari) - 7/10 - Same as FES. Sad fate for this young man...
  • Judgement (everyone in SEES) - 3/10 - there's not even a story for this. Reach tartarus top floor and tadaaa, your Sl is maxed.
  • Aeon (Aigis) - 5/10 - FFFF Yuri in my game 屮゚Д゚)屮 Actually it was perfectly fine when it was MaleMC, but the dialogue really didn't change much for FemMC and made it look like Aigis is being Les to the FemMC. Her attachment to the main character is just too strong -_-

Overall, I find myself really enjoying P3P over the course of these 3 weeks. The addition of Skill Cards made Persona fusion to fight the ultimate boss much easier than FES, and the addition of extra quests in Vision Quests adds some more challenges to the game. The only drawback of the game, at least for me is the lame ending (really, "you die and we'll still remember you, you revive and we forget everything, but somehow we still remember because of a certain event").

Now gimme P4P, or the next Atlus's project on PS3/360!

[DotA] RD's replay of the month - July & August

Finally a post after almost a month, after a few "minor" things happened to prevent me to spare time on this blog.

Nevertheless, I only just realize that I forgot to put a post of my favorite DotA replay for July, partly because so many huge things happened in those month (ESWC, G-League, WCG ASIA etc), which made selecting good replay partially difficult. And even this month there are also some great tournaments being held in China, including Intel Extreme Masters and National Electronic Sports Open 2010. So many great replays, in the end I can only pick a few as my choice for these 2 months.

Starting with my favorite replay for July:

[WCG ASIA 2010] Grand Final: Nirvana.my vs Starboba

Events: World Cyber Games 2010 - Asia
Maps/version: Dota-allstars 6.67c, version 1.24e
GameMode: -cmoi
Length: 63:38 minutes

Replay download: [gosugamers]

The reason I like this replay is Starboba's unorthodox draft of picking a combination of mass heal+armor debuff strategy, which worked really well in this game. Their strength truly shine in teamfight when SP's ultimate, Warlock's mass slow and WD's bouncing stun combined to disrupt Nirvana's coordination, then added with Slardar's armor penalty and Jugger's menacing Spin and Omnislash (don't forget his Healing Ward too). It was clear that Starboba intended to do this strat for the grand final right from the start, evident by the very short time taken by Soso.on to pick each heroes (less than 10 secs for each pick).

Nevertheless, SB's way to victory was also helped partially by some of Nirvana's uncharacteristic mistake. Mushi's doesn't seem to be at the top of his game, and at one point when teamfight ensued near Roshan, he opted to continue hitting Roshan (almost died) rather than focusing on SB's heroes, and as a result, Nirvana lost the teamfight.

Overall it was a really nice game to watch, action packed, great execution of strategy and good team clashes. The only downside of the game is that Nirvana made too many mistake that cost them the game.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Now, to the replay of August. I had a hard time deciding for this one, because as I mentioned before, there are many great replay coming from the recent Chinese tournament, but not many of them actually have a distinct feature, or something that made them a memorable replay (eg 2 rapier medusa/mass push strat etc). Hence, my pick for replay of the month, August:

[NESO 2010] Playoff - LGD.SGTY vs GD

Events: National Electronic Sports Open 2010
Maps/version: Dota-allstars 6.67c, version 1.24e
GameMode: -cm
Length: 82:49 minutes

Replay download: [gosugamers]

Long game. This game is played in best of 3 format in the last 16 round of NESO, held in China 2 weeks ago. An event which saw the return of Chinese powerhouse CityHunter, the crack in LGD's domination, as well as the exposure of pub star like Ckk and Nada to competitive dota. With ckk on SF and ZSMJ on Medusa, you really would expect something awesome to happen in this game. As I said previously, the game probably didn't have anything spectacular in term of innovation in strategy, or a gamebreaking teamfight that triggers a comeback. But it was full of actions and imo worth the watch if you want to see some great kunkka/shadow fiend play.

LGD themselves played a part in their defeat as Ch's venomancer and 2009's Rhasta was caught so many times, giving GD the opportunity to gain the upper hand in many team clashes. On a note, at one point ZSMJ's medusa had over 10k gold due to some insane farming, unfortunately it was not enough to save LGD. This time he decided not to go for double Rapier (as he did against EHOME), which IMO is the right thing to do because the rest of LGD heroes can be taken down easily by GD, making it almost impossible for Medusa to wield Rapier safely. LGD eventually lost the game 2:1 and was knocked out to the loser bracket, but for some undisclosed reason the decided to forfeit their loser bracket game...a sad end to LGD's journey in NESO 2010.

p/s: the other 2 games of LGD vs GD are also nice to watch.

First Impression: Persona 3 Portable

Since I've been wasting close to 2 hours everyday just being a sitting duck in the bus on the way to university and back home, I often spend those time playing PSP (if I'm not tied with any major assignment). Early this month, the english version of Persona 3 Portable (P3P), the enhanced remake of PS2 awesome rpg Persona 3 FES into PSP was released, and since I've just submitted my assignent a few weeks ago, I decided to try this game.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable is an enhanced remake of Persona 3 for the PlayStation Portable. Player would have the option to play as a female character. This selection alters some aspects of the story: the first Persona gained by the Protagonist, Orpheus, will have a different appearance; Igor's assistant in the Velvet Room, Elizabeth, can be replaced with a male equivalent named Theodore. The gender choice also alters some aspects of the Social Link stories. Persona 3 Portable only includes the story of the original Persona 3.

The game's revised battle system draws on elements added in Persona 3's successor, Persona 4. In combat, the player is able to directly control every character, as an alternative to utilizing the game's artificial intelligence. The ability to guard has been added, and allies will take fatal attacks for the Protagonist, preventing his or her death. Outside of Tartarus, instead of navigating the game world by directly controlling the Protagonist, the player guides an on-screen cursor around an area, allowing interaction with characters and objects. The game includes the voice acting of the original game, although characters are not shown in the world, instead being represented by on-screen portraits. Several cameos of characters from Persona 4 have been added to Persona 3 Portable, including Yukiko Amagi, a playable character from Persona 4.

Developers: Atlus
Platform: PlayStation Portable (PSP)

Genre: Tactical RPG

Release date: Nov 2009 (JP); July 2010 (ENG)

After playing for a few hours (at 16/6), I have to say that this Persona 3 remake was AWESOME. As said above, the game now allows you to pick either a male or female main character to begin the game. Picking male will essentially made you play the exact same Persona 3 FES story, while picking female protagonist will gave you some slight alteration in Social Links and dialogues, and gave new perspective to the players, or so the game stated. Since I've previously played Persona 3 on PS2, I decided to play P3P as female protagonist (don't mind being a les...omg).

Nevertheless, for some reason I can barely recall the difference between P3 and P4, and hence I don't really notice major changes in the gameplay of P3P. The gameplay was pretty similar to P3/P4 and players who have played these games will definitely have no problem adapting to P3P gameplay. One major thing I noticed is that we can heal inside Tartarus for MUCH cheaper price than in P4. Additionally, your party never seem to get tired until after you leave Tartarus, although they did complained that they're tired. Hence it's a really good bonus if I want to grind the hell out of the Tartarus for hours without worrying about fatigue. Elemental weakness, "One More", "All-Out-Attack", "Co-op Attack" remained pretty much the same.

Outside battle, we don't actually have sprites to represent your characters. Dialogue/scenes and town navigation follows what you often see in visual novel, where we move a pointer from one spot to another in order to go to a certain place while dialogues only features characters with changing facial expressions. Nice way to simplify things I'd say. Other than that, you can also choose who's going to be Igor's assistant in the Velvet Room - either the same Elizabeth in P3, or the male counterpart, Theodore. Being a female protagonist, I picked Theo and didn't regret my choice because he's really one amusing character, especially when he went to date with my female character around the town :3

Graphic wise, there's not much changes. Apart from visual novel-style cutscenes, the animation scenes were also changed into CG scenes. The same goes for musics/ost. For most of the part, it looks to me that P3P still retained the same bgm from P3, except maybe in a few part of the game. The intro was nice though.

Lastly, the Social Links. Picking a female main character slightly changed some of the Social Links (eg Hermit and Chariot). And like P4, you can even form Lovers relationship with several males.... including Akihiko, Junpei (!), Ken (!), Ryouji and Theo... damn I don't know if I should say "awsm" here. Nevertheless, I feel that Social Link ranking in P3P wasn't as significant as it used to be in P4 (I totally forgot what it did in P4 though), beside creating the final Persona. Anyway, Rio ♥

Overall, I have to say that I am very satisfied with P3p so far. Being ported to PSP doesn't mean the game was downgraded, and P3P certainly isn't, the addition of female character in fact even make things even more interesting. There seems to be a lot more to be offered in term of sidequest, new game plus etc, I am definitely looking forward to the rest of the contents (Yukiko cameo ftw). A DEFINITE MUST PLAY for Persona fans.

p/s - Kenji: "I like you as much as I like Ramen" I LOL'd

I named my female lead character as Mizuhara Haruka. I kinda lol when I found that one of the Social Link NPC also has the exact same last name. Coincidence much :p

The Impression Series: Spring 2010 anime; part 2

Was a bit late to put this post up because of so many reasons. Anyway part 2 of my Summer 2010 anime impression, continued from part 1 in this entry.

Mitsudomoe
MAL/Official Site
Number of episodes: 13
Studio Production: Bridge
Comments: Yabe Satoshi is a newly graduated school teacher and on his first job as middle school teacher, he was appointed to a certain class ruled by Marui triplets: Mitsuba, Futaba and Hitoha. So the story goes as he tries to cope with the triplet's "mischievous" deeds. This show seriously made me ROFL to the stomach, watching how Yabe, all with his funny Yoichii (Bakatesto) voice all over the place trying to deal with each of the triplet's unique personality. The sadistic and mature Mitsuba; the energetic and boobs-obsessed Futaba; and the quiet and mysterious (one way to say it) Hitoha. Hitoha really remind me of Minami Chiaki, bar the pervert part. The jokes really got me laughing almost non-stop while watching the show. So funny, yet so dirty, kinda like a combination of Hanamaru Youchien+Kodomo no Jikan. Simply put, a must watch for total laugh :3
verdict: 4.5 (must watch)

Legend of the Legendary Heroes
MAL/Official Site
Number of episodes: 26
Studio Production: ZEXCS
Comments: aka Densetsu Yuusha no Densetsu. Don't you think the title was a bit...cliche/old school? Anyway the series is about Raina Lute, a bearer of an incredibly powerful spell symbols called Alpha Stigma, together with a renowned swordwoman Ferris Eris, went on the journey in search of "Legendary" relics all over the continents, only to find that something even worse waiting for them. Totally love the fantasy setting. The animation was simple yet clean (but was ruined by the horrible subs though [pun intended]), and the spells animation was really great, they simply remind me to all the great time I had while playing Tales series. The way the plot was presented was also interesting, introducing a bit of the characters before going back to the past to show events leading to what the characters are at present. I am also quite intrigued with the characters, from the lazy ass Lute (the origin of his eyes), Alto's connection with Eris's brother and of course, Eris herself with all those huge sword she swings around (her background was interesting too).
p/s: Jun Fukuyama sure did a lot of series these days.
verdict: 4/5 (must watch)

Highschool of the Dead
MAL/Official Site
Number of episodes: 12
Studio Production: Madhouse Studios
Comments: Arguably the most overhyped (and initially oversubbed) show this season. I used to read a few chapters of the manga long ago before the HDD crash thingy, and I have to say I'm loving the theme of widespread disease turning people into zombie-like creatures, aka a more pandemic Resident Evil/Left 4 Dead apocalyptic pandemic. Ok enough of that. So far as my memory recalls, the plot doesn't deviate much from the original, but I wonder how much can they really fit into a 12-episodes anime. Animation-wise was average at best, while the animation production they still retained the fanservice featuring some ridiculously disproportionated figures for female characters, like those in Dragonaut... (wtf with the oversized and bouncing boobs). The OP was good, but the ED song was definitely my fav :3
verdict: 3.5/5 (watching)

Asobi ni Iku yo
MAL/Official Site
Number of episodes: 13
Studio Production: AIC PLUS+
Comments: Oh god more cats? Okay, not only cats, but aliens. One thing I like about the show is the mix of seriousness and harem fanservices. Girls with guns, secret organizations and actions involved with some crazy characters - a somewhat ignorant cat girls, a military-trained childhood friend and a classmate with superpowers. Too bad with all those unique girls, the main male character Kakazu Kio turned out to be a stereotype, ordinary character, I mean ffs that was uninteresting! Nice animation while nothing really unique about the plot, but at least this show got me sitting for a few more episodes.
Verdict: 3/5 (watching...a bit more)

Amagami
MAL/Official Site
Number of episodes: 26
Studio Production: AIC
Comments: Amagami SS basically tells the story of Tachibana Junichi who meet several interesting girls during his high school life and has a chance to date each of them, in an independent arc. Simply put, the anime version of your typical dating sim game. Might not be the cup of some people, but I definitely love the show because I find love story in each of girl's arc wasn't really typical of the normal school romance you often see in shoujo mangas. Starting with the lively Morishima arc (a kiss to the back of the knee, wth), and most probably ended with (imo) the most interesting arc, Ayatsuji Tsukasa, I am actually looking forward to each episode lol. Great animation and girl-specific ED too.
verdict: 4/5 (must watch)

not making into the list:
  • Sekirei Pure Engagement - since I've read a lot of the manga a long time ago, for some reason I really didn't feel any sort of anticipation from the anime.
  • Shukufuku no Campanella - wow, ARIA much. Not really caught my interest with all the generic harmony feeling in each episodes.
  • Sengoku Basara 2 - more of a case "Sub-fucking WHAR" seriously 450mb+ per episode is killing my quota. Ok recently a more tolerable sub was released, but I don't feel like adding more title to the already expanded list of mine -_-

p/s: It's kinda disappointing that many of the series so far are lacking decent fansubber, while some subbers are simply affected by the new season syndrome and subbing for the lulz.
